McCallum vs Watson...Reg Gutteridge Commentary

First does anyone think this fight was close? Or that watson at anytime looked like winning?

I know folk treat Reg Gutteridge as a great commentator but IMO he was one of the most biased ever. Am sick of hearing his crap on older fights involving a Brit being taken apart by fighter from another country.

I thought that just sick of hearing his monotone recently and his stupid bias.

The fight was not close.

Watson found out that there was a world of difference between the British stars he duked it out with at the time & the likes of McCallum.

What's even more staggering was that McCallum was getting on a bit too.

mccallum another level....i got drunk that night, some do on in local pub that day and i came home early to watch it that night rather than stay out....and its the only time i cried watching boxing...watson was all heart.....only other time i felt like that i think was watching jim mcdonnell v azumah nelson which was around that time too....remarkably brave brave efforts

Yes, Watson took some severe punches. Very game, waving McCallum on as he tried to finish him. I enjoyed the fight, Mike was sublime, so relaxed.

Gutteridge and Carpenter were both very biased.

Hope vs Benitez and Graham vs Kalambay(first fight) are another two good examples.

Nowadays a fight needs five guys/girls doing tag-team commentary to avoid dead-air as though they were on radio. Blah blah blah! Introduce the fighters. Once a round mention who is who just in case there are folks tuning in late. Talk if something unusual or confusing has happened. The rest of the time keep your trap shut. Biased commentators are almost as bad as constant talkers.

coz I can make my mind up meself - I like sitting next to biased fans when I go to fights, its part of the fun. have you ever sat next to a fan of a bloke who is getting a slow pasting but refuses to see it and keeps telling you his bloke "...won that round too!...but I bet they give it even"

plus I almost never favour one opponent over another. don't care if the guy is a brit or a londoner or if he's a back foot specialist or a KO merchant. I'm always undecided. I like biased people as long as they know something about the sport.

Enjoyed both reg" it travelled along way but he got the message " gutteridge and Harry " get in there frank " carpenter, some of the big fights wouldnt of been the same without them calling it, cant think of any fight that was spoiled by their commentary for me.

Its perhaps true that Reg and Watt showed some bias where brit fighters were concerned.

but their calling of neutral fights was peerless i m o. The whole of Chavez - Rosario was a master class from both men.
