Referee's wearing head camera - For or Against
Referee's wearing head camera - For or Against
Tonight's referee was wearing a head camera which I've never seen before.
They showed some of the close up footage from the camera on television in between rounds.
I liked it.
What do you make of that ?

That made ref look even more foolish then nature intended. They need to conceal it somehow.

Re: Referee's wearing head camera - For or Against
I'd have preferred a brain camera/scan or something along those lines tonight to get an idea wtf the ref was thinking to stop that fight without a count on the second KD in the main event. You let the guy take a count & take it from there. In particular when the guy dropped had potentially won all the rounds up til that point & didn't seem seriously hurt. Horrible ref.
Re: Referee's wearing head camera - For or Against
The headband did look kind of stupid but I liked the video footage it provided. I agree with Reggie that the ref in the Berto-Lopez bout should have at least issued a count on the 2nd knockdown before stopping it.
Re: Referee's wearing head camera - For or Against
Most of the time I spend watching the fighters unless of course something looks like it's in the offing, when referee's get close to the action normally indicates that they're more prone to act so more attention is focused on them at that point.
Other than that they stand relatively clear of the action although there have been mistakes in the past and ones that will occur from time to time in the future.
The head camera could actually serve as a learning tool for future referee's and improve the sport, there's much good that could be said about it.
As for how the referee looked the first time I saw him was funny, then I didn't give it too much thought and found it in no way distracting for the referee or myself watching.
The potential of the camera actually breaking is slim although I could it slipping off a sweaty headed referee officiating a physical inside fight under the lights, the potential of it cutting one of the fighters while trying to break is remote but does exist.
The actual footage itself showed a more intimate look from the referee's perspective that showed the boxers in a new light, Erick Bones face up close literally in the heat of action looked different from the normal camera angles we're used to.
For the viewer I would have thought it a very positive move, it certainly unique like it or not.

Was it Kenny Bayless who rec'd Garcia/Khan? I can't remember
But whoever it was they were wearing a camera that was nowhere near as visable,I think the commission, like us fans hate that refereee and wanted to see him look a dick for our entertainment

Head cameras? Not necessary at all.
Re: Referee's wearing head camera - For or Against
Instead of head-cams why not show the fans at home what the judges' scores are during the fight. That way we know but it won't influence the fighters.
Re: Referee's wearing head camera - For or Against
a gopro on the chest could make an interesting
angle without disturbing the ref. head would make
him look ridiculous.

Re: Referee's wearing head camera - For or Against
Several years ago at the NCBA collegiate nationals in Reno, College sports channel that became CBS sports used the camera on top of a beanie type of hat the ref's wore and called it the ref cam. It sucked. It made the ref's looked look like idiots and you could tell they were stiff moving around so it wouldn't fall off and the view it showed was no big deal.
Either come up with a body type camera that cops wear or forget about it. Basically I am against it.

Strongly against. The refs look like idiots. I understand the need to introduce new perspectives and I like the 360 cam, but come on.

Strongly for but for the same reason as youbig train express wrote:Strongly against. The refs look like idiots. I understand the need to introduce new perspectives and I like the 360 cam, but come on.
Re: Referee's wearing head camera - For or Against
Never saw the footage but im never against people trying new technology, ideally it would be more discreetly placed. The advantage of it being head mounted is that it gives a better idea of what the ref is actually looking at as it turns with their head.
Two examples i can think of when this would be or would have been an advantage are:
1: have a head to toe close up of the ring card girls between rounds
2: the referees actual view during Mayweather v Ortiz. Lol

I wore a bow tie fitted with a camera for 2 fights one night when I refereed
Re: Referee's wearing head camera - For or Against
How about a camera on the judges' scorecards?

Got to be for it.
Why not?
We get shots we wouldn't normally see. It adds something extra for viewers and I'm betting that every so often we'll get a little gem. I bet Steve Willis would get some good shots.

Re: Referee's wearing head camera - For or Against
Yes it was Kenny Bayless who refereed Amir Khan's knockout loss to Danny Garcia. And when you see the footage from the camera that Bayless wore, you could see how much Khan was in queer street after Garcia had dropped him. As for ref cams. We see it in rugby union when the referee wears the camera like a chest pack which goes over the shoulders with the camera popping out below the refs adams'a pple. So I am already use to seeing it in aother sport and would make sense not only to give the television viewer a better insight of what is going on but also help improve officiating as well.handsofstone wrote:Was it Kenny Bayless who rec'd Garcia/Khan? I agree that the ref looked ridiculous, but I liked the footage. I think the 360 cam was lame as eff. The picture is all grainy, and moving through camera stills was stupid......couldn't they at least keep the action rolling while moving through the cameras?big train express wrote:Strongly against. How about one inside their heads? Now that WOULD be mesmerizing.
