Kovalev is looking for a new trainer
Kovalev is looking for a new trainer

Even though he says that he will keep working with JDD, moving a camp from Florida means that they will not work much together.
About a year ago, on Russian TV, Kovalev was complaining about quality and quantity of sparring saying that he was thinking about changing a trainer. Now it comes to reality.

Re: Kovalev is looking for a new trainer
Hopefully it turns out to be the right move rather than a disruption right before fighting Stevenson.
Edit: just read the article again, looks like he's fighting his mandatory first anyway.

Florida too hot & humid in the winter!
What a Poof!
My hood is full of octogenarians jogging, cycling & playing tennis (& complaining about the lack of restrooms) & he can't even handle some early morning jogs & some mincey sparring sessions.
Pathetic. I thought he was meant to be a tough guy.

As I speak there's a 78 year old lady from Wisconsin power-walking along the pier.ikorolev wrote:Nice Florida patriotismTaansend wrote:Florida too hot & humid in the winter!

Wisconsin is very very cold. They don't stop going on about it.
On a serious note, California will be much better for him. Shitloads of tough Mexicans out there to train with. And hills to run up.
No water though. The locals need that for their lawns.

He's probably just being diplomatic. Florida is like the middle east of America with all the nutty sh!t that goes down there. Anytime I see some nutty ass story in the news there is like a 75% chance when I hear the location that it happened in Florida. Idk wtf is going on there or why, but its filled with crazies & he's smart to gtfo. No offenseTaansend wrote:Florida too hot & humid in the winter!

Kovelev grew up in a cold climate, so he may in fact be not so comfortable in Florida. I am pretty sure that the climate is not the main reason though. As I said, he was unhappy with his sparring opportunities, so he is moving to where boxing civilization is more developed.
I guess Kovey would have shuddered and wilted at the thought of fighting in the unbearable heat and humidity of Manila or the same conditions found in Zaire when Ali survived both Frazier and Foreman.
I can almost see why a badass like Kovey wouldn't wan't to experience any "minimal discomfort."
It's unlikely that Sports Illustrated will feature him on the cover anytime soon with the same headline that once lauded Marvin Hagler---"Mr. Tough Guy"

I hazard a guess, he is heading to Oxnard to Robbert Garcia gym.ikorolev wrote:http://www.BS.com/kovalev-upda ... sia--89096?

The key word is BOTH. There is no reason to be the only side training in worse conditions.SenorPipino wrote: I guess Kovey would have shuddered and wilted at the thought of fighting in the unbearable heat and humidity of Manila or the same conditions found in Zaire when Ali survived both Frazier and Foreman.

It does appear that way, doesn't it. They do have an open disclosure so anyone arrested is named immediately, whether guilty or not - so the press have stories & photos of all crimes, etc. It's also warm all year round so people are outside more.ReggieDiggs wrote:He's probably just being diplomatic. I'm from London but have lived in Southern Florida (both coasts) & around California. The town I'm in now in the safest & most law abiding (because it's full of posh bastards in the winter & dead in the summer)

yeah, definitely need a place more developed than the place that developedikorolev wrote:so he is moving to where boxing civilization is more developed.
rjj, winky, tarver, lacey, thurman, berto, randall bailey, james warring, nate campbell,
like a million cuban defectors and world class guys training for title fights going back
to ali training in dundee's gym and duran, boxers who move there for tax reasons
to join all the athletes and entertainers, and god knows how many olympians and
international amateurs. i don't think it would be possible to name all the florida
based fighters who have fought internationally as pros. there would be maybe
100 guys or more.

I understand his desire to move to Florida but he should stick with JDD because he has been highly successful under his guidance, I just hope he finds someone at the level of Jackson or better.

Re: Kovalev is looking for a new trainer
If location and lack of quality sparring is Kov's main concerns, JDD shouldn't have too much objection to travel to wherever Kov decides to set up a permanent camp that is more to his liking.
If Kov is one of those 'next level' fighters that many think he is, especially if JDD himself thinks so, he would be a fool to let Kov walk over location and lack of quality sparring, without following Kov at least for the camps themselves, and then he can simply go back home after the fight.
I understand that he probably has a responsibility to more fighters than just Kov, but so does Freddie, and he'll fly to wherever Pac wants him, because hey, even with all the other success he's had training fighters, Pac's career has been Freddie's life's-blood.
Either Kov doesn't think JDD can improve him anymore and is just trying to be nice about why he's leaving, or else JDD would be foolish to not keep the dream alive by going where Kov goes when he's training.

Isn't Kovalev the only elite fighter JDJ got ?
