Paul Doyle

Post by doug.ie »

Anyone know much about the life of Paul Doyle ?...the 1920's welterweight from Brooklyn...never found any worthwhile reading on him...
not a champion at the new light-welter weight like the poster suggests though.

He was my grandfather. He died before I was born so I never knew him. I remember we had some trophies of his from MSG growing up. His real name wasn't Paul Doyle but Paul San Filippo and he was born in Messina Sicily I believe. I was told he was forced to fight under another name due to prejudice against Italians at the time. I'm very glad you posted this pic as I've never seen it before and there's not much else on the internet regarding him. Where did you find this? I'm also confused by the world champion part as it was my understanding that he held regional titles but not a world championship. Thanks again.
