Mayweather-Pacquiao: Replay Rights?

Post by Jack 1000 »

Greetings,

As Mayweather-Pacquiao is a joint HBO/Showtime production, does the winner of the fight to whom he is under contract get the station replay rights? (Mayweather=Showtme) (Pacquiao=HBO.) What happens if the fight is a draw? Would like confirmation on this, please. Thanks!

If Mayweather were to sign with HBO in 2016, then there wouldn’t be any sharing of the telecast and HBO could then replay the fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao without having to deal with Showtime.

If HBO chooses to insist on being the one that replays the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, then it puts Showtime in the position where they would miss out on the huge amount of viewers who will be tuning in to see the fight on non-PPV a week after the fight. It’s not a good deal for the cable giant that doesn’t get a chance to replay the fight.

When HBO and Showtime shared a joint telecast in 2002 in televising the Mike Tyson vs. Lennox Lewis fight, it was decided that the winner of the fight would have his network show the replay a week later. It’s unclear why that method isn’t good now with the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight

Nothing has been put out about the rights other than the above.

As I understand it, Floyd has a rematch clause in the contract should he want it. I'm not sure if Manny is able to activate it though. From what I've read the contract definitely favours Floyd more, 60/40 money split to him.

They should just both broadcast the replay simultaneously. I don't see how this is even an issue.

The issue isn't the rematch clause or whether or not the contract favors Floyd who is the A side of the equation, the issue is who should broadcast the replay of the bout/the fight you don't have to pay the PPV premium for.

Which network deserves to air it?

They should just both broadcast the replay simultaneously.
I agree with this because it is fair.

I do!

Nope,

There is no rematch clause. This was misquoted in the media. But that's not to say that they won't work on a rematch if some controversy goes down. With the way this promotion has been, and the circus-like atmosphere, I have a bad feeling about some unpleasant crap happening.
