was ricky hatton one of mayweather toughest fights

Post by brilo33 »

watching the hatton v mayweather thought ricky was close with Floyd Mayweather, till he got ko, but maybe with a little bit of a tactical change he could on gone closer, i think as hatton is a spoiler which helped against a fighter like floyd, not under any illusion that mayweather wasn't the winner in any way

I don't think Floyd had fully grown into the welterweight division by then, I think this Floyd of the last few years would deal with him much better. I don't think the fight was particularly close but Hatton certainly pushed him harder than he has been for a while, and Hatton was prepared to go out on his back trying to win rather than lose a UD.

more than anything, i think Hatton showed why most of Floyds other opponents dont try and just walk him down and throw loads of shots like everyone wanted pacquiao to do! He's obviously physically strong and has enough power to keep people honest, and he is so good up close especially with the rough and dirty stuff!

Ricky really gave it 100% all the way to the end in that fight! much better effort than a lot of people ever gave Floyd

Floyd himself had said it a few times am sure, he said Ricky was very tough and hit hard. I thought Floyd handled him fairly easily though Cortez was a disgrace that night.

Cortez was a joke! Ricky left it all in there for sure. I'm not sure ricky would have got a better result by fighting differently. He did what he knew best and put on a show.

From memory Hatton was pressing Floyd throughout and roughing him up a little but he hardly landed any clean shots, he had him on the backfoot all night and under pressure on the ropes often, but Mayweather was never in any trouble, he handled the pressure well, showed great defence as always by not taking any clean shots.

Cortez was horrible that night, he mightbas well have come into the ring in Mayweathers pocket, he was biased as fxuk, had he stopped the blatant use of the elbow Hatton may have gotten some good work in when he had him pinned down.

Mayweather showed how physically strong he was on the inside and nullified Hatton easily.
Hatton was on the inside because PBF let him showing how comfortable he was to be there, demonstrating he can do more than counter punch going backwards!

The ref didn't help to be fair. Wouldn't let Hatton work on the inside at all.

If floyd was growing into welter then don't forget hatton had only fought 36 minutes at 147 as well.....and hadn't exactly looked a natural.

Not saying Ricky would have done any better against FMW at 140 but it was yet another limiting factor against him.

Ricky gave a good account of himself that night but Joe Cortez was nothing short of a disgrace as a ref. Terrible officiating, clearly wanted to make a name for himself that night.
