Reckon Spike TV will do any more boxing?

Post by ILikeBeer »

I mean their punditry was terrible. Just historically bad. To a point where you'll be able to tell your grand kids you watched the worst punditry in the history of televised sport.

But, it is good to have boxing on free view still. I think that's important. It'll be good if they get more.

As long as the pundits are boxing experts, and not rugby league players and random drunks.

I hope so. The first fight was really good and the second ruined by injury.

The punditry was pretty poor but during the fights it was less biased than the usual offering from Sky

I've watched the fights but skipped the chat but I might have to watch it for the laugh, from what I did see it looked truly baffling, especially as I've since found out that the guy I didn't recognize was a rugby player

It depends.

Did Spike actually make an investment in boxing on Saturday or did Dennis pay their production costs as he did Primetime's for the McDonnell V Ceja bill?

If it's the latter, then there probably won't be many (if any) more.

Agree if it was spike then it would be nice even if it was just a repeat of the U.S. Shows from the weekend before. Be good to see a decent standard of boxing shown on TV for free

The impression I got, is that the channel wants to be the home of laddish programming. It's picked up boxing because it's fan base is predominantly male.

I wouldn't get too carried away by the channel being any kind of saviour of British boxing. The coverage was more; "Hey people are hitting each other. Banter.", to make me consider it was that serious about the sport.

Hopefully it'll pick up some decent small hall shows though for cheap.

I agree. It was trying to appeal to the laddish type thing but failing badly.

That nonsense in the bar (or whatever it was) was embarressing.

Was it as bad as the commentary for Englands first ever game on channel 5? I don't remember much about that game other than the terrible commentary and 'ssssssshhhhhheeeeeaaaaarrrrrrreeeeer' going on for about 15 mins after a goal

Well according to some tweets I've seen the Haskins show 13th June is on Spike and Channel 5 (can't really see the point in that)

If they do they'll serious need to drop the Fish, Chips and Scraps gimmick. Possibly the most cringe worthy thing I’ve ever watched. Reminded me of TFI Friday, hosted by Chris Evans on Channel 4, from the mid 90's but worse.

Maybe their giving fans the option. Tune into Channel 5 for a professional presentation, or Spike for a clusterf*ck

I was kind of expecting the commentators to dance around when the credits music rolled, Men Behaving Badly style.

Yes Chris Evans is still in charge. Hopefully, he'll be in an outrageous suit and Kylie & Ginger spice are back on

Maybe he should get a couple of British title fights on the show, and provide analysis.

I think people have failed to realise something.

Spike and Channel 5 are the same company.

They are both owned by Viacom (Richard Desmond sold 5 to them last year), and 5 manages Spike UK's output.

It was great to have free boxing on TV this weekend, but it's unlikely that Spike/5/Viacom made any real investment into the sport. If you were a TV exec would you pay a substantial fee for a bill topped by with a fringe title being contested by a guy who was written off not long ago? In all likelihood, Spike took this show because they got it for free or were even paid to take it.

No, I realised that.

It's a good point you make, though. Maybe the boxing they are more serious about will be on Five. The less ones will be on Spike, whilst people analyse how good their fish and chips taste.

I'm hoping the bill next week will be treated with a bit more respect.

Undercard on Spike & main event on channel 5? I think that would work pretty well.
