Frampton vs Gonzalez Jr: Your thoughts?
Frampton vs Gonzalez Jr: Your thoughts?
Carl Frampton is fighting next month against Alejandro Gonzalez Jr, his first fight in the US. Thoughts?

Disappointing.
Re: Frampton vs Gonzalez Jr: Your thoughts?
It's a poor matchup.
Whilst I admire Carl Frampton, he's going in against a guy who:
1. Has never fought in a scheduled 12 rounder.
2. Who isn't even ranked in the top 15 of the IBF's Super Bantamweight rankings. (http://www.fightnews.com/rankings-2)
3. And is currently ranked 55th by Boxrec. (http://boxrec.com/ratings.php?sex=m&div ... t&pageID=3)
This guy DOES NOT deserve a shot at Carl's IBF title. And here was me hoping for Rey Vargas.

I know you're a Frampton fan so fair play for admitting it's a poor match up as apposed to being blinded by bias.Crease wrote:It's a poor matchup.

I'm very disappointed. I expected a better fight, particularly when Barry McGuigan is turning down big money deals from Eddie Hearn and hinting at bigger and better things for Carl in local media.danamba7 wrote:I know you're a Frampton fan so fair play for admitting it's a poor match up as apposed to being blinded by bias.

Re: Frampton vs Gonzalez Jr: Your thoughts?
Underwhelming. A 'world' title fight that would have been merely a non-title fight in another era...no different to many world title fights these days mind.
Re: Frampton vs Gonzalez Jr: Your thoughts?
Mind you I don't know what people were realistically expecting?

Not a thrilling match. The only positive i can think of is that a good performance over there will mean he might get big fights over there as well as the quigg option.
Underwhelmed by it though.

Re: Frampton vs Gonzalez Jr: Your thoughts?
Frampton is my favourite fighter and I am looking forward to seeing him out again but the opponent is way below par for a fighter of Carl's ability. It's probably a decent payday for him and gets him some exposure over the water. I just hope it's a warm up for something big towards the end of the year!

Maybe this fight is purposely made to lead to those bigger and better things.Crease wrote:I'm very disappointed. a spectacular looking first win on US soil leading to big fights over there = kerching.
not finding excuses its a poor fight, just trying to see the reasoning.

This is a bit disappointing, but, having said this - is it any worse than some of the folk Quigg has been up against in the last year or so... as a supposed 'champion'... I think its indented as a bit of a showcase to the US audience.

I'm disappointed as usual when it comes to barry's management of one of my favourite fighters

There you go. Signs with Haymon and immediately starts fighting tomato cans. Its a disgrace!
I am officially off the bandwagon. Well, untill he fight Rigo.

(After ducking Quigg) For a world title defence somebody within the top 50 is not too much to ask.Cholo_cws wrote:Mind you I don't know what people were realistically expecting?

I have long washed my hand on Quiggo and his cherry picking ass. Hope Kiko knocks him the flat out.Pugilist-specialist wrote:He wouldn't fight Quiggo, never mind RigoTarkus wrote:There you go. Signs with Haymon and immediately starts fighting tomato cans. Its a disgrace!

What about when he has his official 'homecoming' bout after a couple of 'meh' victories?Tarkus wrote:There you go. Signs with Haymon and immediately starts fighting tomato cans. Its a disgrace!

Re: Frampton vs Gonzalez Jr: Your thoughts?
It's a very underwhelming fight, but one I could accept if Carl is back within a couple of months after. He's not been the most active fighter in the last three years or so. If he got this "showcase" done and arranged a decent fight for September I would not complain.
Re: Frampton vs Gonzalez Jr: Your thoughts?
You can see why he is doing it, with the exposure in the states, and fighting a mexican is the best idea for anyone below Lightweight for me. However, get it on in Boston or New York and get at least one Irish expat in there, maybe if you backdate to grandparents there might be 6 or 7.
Huge Frampton fan, but I am not out of my chair in excitement for this one.

First thought: Bloody Hell, it's Cobrita Gonzalez's son.
Second thought: Was Kevin Kelley's nephew otherwise engaged?

Re: Frampton vs Gonzalez Jr: Your thoughts?
I think this is a case of promoters (I know Haymon isn't officially a promoter but you know what I mean) dipping their toe in quite conservatively to a new market. Frampton in the US is obviously a new market and I think we just have to accept that when fighters sign for a new promoter that promoter is almost always going to be conservative with their first fight. We see Matchroom do it with new signings and it's pointless moaning because the other promoters do it, and we're seeing it here.
Re: Frampton vs Gonzalez Jr: Your thoughts?
So disappointing.
Massive Frampton fan (and a convert after thinking he was just an upstart and not keen on McGuigans big mouth) but this is really disappointing from them.
I understand he'll get huge money for an easy fight (and I don't think he's cherry picked a thing on his way up) but this is abysmal.
I hope there's a plan for his next year as he's a great, exciting fighter who needs to be in good fights to keep that alive. Forget Quigg, I understand why they don't want to do business with Hearn, but all roads lead to Rigo.

Re: Frampton vs Gonzalez Jr: Your thoughts?
Could be a frustrating year for Frampton as he'll have the winner of tomorrow's eliminator to look forward too as well. Quigg would have been a huge money fight but Gonzalez then Tawatchai/Wake will be two rather low profile bouts. If Mares or LSC is the target later in the year then fair enough but if they aren't I'm not sure where Haymon takes him
