Who do people think the best British lightweight is?

Personally I'd go for Kevin Mitchell.

Burns
Flanagan
Mathews
Mitchell
Crolla
Campbell
Cardle
Coyle
Evans
Gethin

That would be my top 10. Ormond slots in behind Flanagan if we're including the Irish lads.

I can see Burns staying at light-welter.

I'd put Flanagan number 1 if he wins this weekend.

Back down at lightweight in Hull, was planning to move back down after Lepelley then the Figueroa fight came up.

What is mitchell based on? He's possibly the most overrated british fighter of the last decade

Ricky Burns currently, Seen nothing from Mitchell to say he is above ricky or would have beaten Rick's recent opposition.

Luke campbell will prove to be top dog domestically very soon though.

Based on his last two fights.
I'd say Linares is the best lightweight in the world. Mitchell kept the fight competitive. He showed he belonged at that class. I'd have him world top ten and British number one.
I agree before the last two fights I would of put him in the overrated category. But he seems to have finally matured to a world level fighter.

I feel Burns is on the downhill slope. His last performance was a good one but that was up at LWW. He also kept the Zlaticanin fight competitive. But as I rate Linares higher I'd rate Mitchell higher.

Flanagan still has to prove he belongs at world level. If he wins tomorrow I'd put him straight at number one on the Uk list.

Beating estrada and getting stopped in all 3 attempts at a world title are not enough to keep him world top 10. He's European level at best, especially as burns & katsidis struggat the highest level.

Yeah agree. Burns looked to be back on a bit of form last time out but he was never getting a decision out there. The ref and scorecards proved that. Campbell will be no1 this time next year or sooner I reckon. Looks the business.

So how high do you rank Linares?

And how did you score the Mitchell fight at the time of the stoppage?

He got beat up and quit. After his three fights at world level it is plain to see he isn't at that level, he's taken a pasting every time, just took a bit longer with Linares.

I'd take Abril and Vazquez to outbox Linares and Zlaticanin to knock him out. Linares is very good technically with decent power, but he's come up from featherweight, picking up vacant titles without really beating any quality oppositon and he's seriously vulnerable. If Burns is anywhere near what he was he'd stop Linares, there's no way he'd be able to stand up to that sort of pressure for 12 rounds, I don't really see why the Figueroa fight being at light welter makes a difference, if anything it only makes it a better performance because Ricky's far better off at lightweight where he can really use his size to bully opponents, to go toe to toe for 12 rounds with a fighter who couldn't even get close to 10st shows he's far from finished.

It makes a difference because his last win at lightweight was Gonzales who was outboxing him.
I'd say since Mitchell fought Burns, Mitchell has improved Burns has got worse.
We will know a lot more in the next year. So many Brits around world level could be some good domestic scraps.

I still don't get how that makes a difference, a win/good performance is just that regardless of the weight, especially when it comes at a higher weight that he clearly isn't suited to right now.

I don't see how Mitchell has improved, same as ever, all good when he's on top and having things his own way, but he'll always crumble when he's put under pressure, he doesn't have it in him mentally to win at the highest level and in all honesty, even if he did, he just isn't good enough either.

For me Burns didn't look good at the weight against Gonzales, Beltran and Zlaticanin.
I thought he looked great at Light welter and really pushed Figueroa. Moving back down to lightweight I feel will effect him.

I don't get the fascination with Mitchell. He is not ever going to be a world champ, must be a London thing.

I'm not from London.
I'm not even a huge Mitchell fan. I just feel that he's the best Uk lightweight. At least for the next 12 hours.

Couldn't disagree more. Not that it matters I was sitting 30ft from Mitchell in the linares fight, I think everyone could see the facial damage, and the ref stopped in he didn't quit. Linares is probably the best lightweight in the world, Arbil wouldn't start as favourite against him that's obvious. Vasquez doesn't outbox anyone, he is just superbig and jabs and runs, a more mobile version of Paulie malignaggi!

As for burns being better than linares....I don't know what to say. Burns caught more gift decisions than Chico on X factor! Not even in the same league. Dejan gets sparked by linares, anything else is wishful thinking[/quote]

Yeah the ref did stop it but Mitchell was done! It doesn't matter if you were sitting '30ft' or 400ft, Mitchell's heart wasn't in it at that point! I like Mitchell but he seems to lack the mental strength needed at the top level. Burns done a better job on Mitchell than Linares so I can see where that other dude is coming from tbh. I don't usually go by that mentality but saying Burns isn't in the same league as Linares is just daft. For what it's worth I'd fancy Burns chances against Linares. Would be a good fight.

Maybe if you take your JSA and hope that dejan fights linares you could make a killing on putting it on him to knock linares out

#longoddsforareasonoldman
And what 'gift decisions' are you reffering to regarding Burns? The Beltran fight was a shambles but other than that I don't recall any other 'gift decisions'.

Never said I sparred any "top guys"....I'm too busy working for that (hint hint)

Must be working hard right now, back two minutes and already starting arguments.

Take it your MSc, BSc and PhD have got you a good job then?

Hopefully they do fight... As I said, it would be a good fight to watch. Gonzalez was beating Burns but when Burns started to find his range and started to get back into the fight Gonzalez quit! Nothing lucky about that is there? Gonzalez did the same in his last fight also so it isn't a coincidence.

Never said he wasn't a quitter....but If you want to call one or two rounds out of 8 finding his range then I suppose that's your prerogative
No you said Burns was lucky. Gonzalez quitting has nowt to do with Burns and isn't lucky. He was finding his range! All you need to do is watch the fight again! Mind you, you seem a bit of a moron so I doubt you could even comprehend the obvious

I don't have a PhD so you can continue to call me Mr instead of Dr. I make plenty thank you, professionals with qualifications tend too :)

Your always are very busy on here at any time of day but I feel compelled to ask whether you too Are taking a few days off? Or maybe just taking a break from reed .... #donthatemondays ...#youshouldbeawastedisposalofficer
Ah, so you were lying about your PhD from a redbrick university then. Wonder what else you've lied about?

I'm taking some time off, deciding what I'm going to do next, working tomorrow though.

PS. Please learn to use the multiquote system properly, makes the forum a lot easier to read. I'm sure a man of your considerable academic talents won't have any trouble with that.
