Where now for Saturdays fighters?

Post by stujones »

Unfortunately, I had a wedding to attend on Saturday (and it was a weekender) so I missed the action on Saturday. Whats worse is that my timer setting didn't work, so I haven't got the fight on tape  .

I have heard that I didn't miss much of a contest (in the main event). Scrapie and dull is what I have read. I actually caught the end credits to the repeat showing and I must say one of the knockdowns look like a back of the head job.

What I am posting is the question, where now for Saturdays' fighters. Robin Reid is 33 and I doubt will get much better, there are some very poor champions out there now. The WBA and the WBC holders are particularly poor and it will be a great turn around for a man who looked like he had "fought" his way out of the reckoning with that display against Branco 4 years ago. Reid has to go for a title fight, and it has to be next.

What about Magee? Reid said on teletext that Magee couldn't take his shots and his performance against Elliot would suggest that his strength and chin are not particularly strong. I've often thought that Magee might just make the Middleweight limit (he didn't look big next to Elliot who was a Middle). His career is in a limbo because he is still a fringe contendor and the likes of Dodson and Froch might be considered backward steps. Fighting recently exposed ex champions (like Beyer or Lucas) might be too big a step up. He not the most exiting fighter ever, so I think his career after just one defeat is in very much a limbo stage - unless he can make Middle, where he can definately fight for futher honours.

What about the fighters on the undercard - unfortunately, it looks like yet another Light Middle has been exposed. Where can Moore go after such a comprehensive defeat. He has the advantage of having the British belt, but he seemed just about ready to move up to top 20 or so opposition. Moore seems to be a confidence fighter, I wouldn't want him to fight a rejuvenated Michael Jones after that shocker.

Where is Ossie Duran heading for? I think there is one match out there for him that will capture the imagination and that is Duran vs Williams. Maybe he could be pushed futher and maybe challenge Martinez for the IBO belt.

I did get Damean Kelly's bout, he looked impressive and I hope he can go for a different (but still geniune) championship. Pacheco was a bit too strong (but I thought he did well), however I think Pacheco is too strong for every flyweight.

I think Magee would beat Lucas and especially Beyer whose very average. Beyers no longer champ anyway, I think Magee would KO Sanavia whose the new champ and really a middleweight. None of these guys are punchers and Magee should be a bit more confident to let his punches go against them.

I'm not saying your not correct (although I would tip Lucas and I think Beyer could pull out a punch). However, Magee is going to struggle to secure those matches now. Also, a first defeat is hard to swallow, isn't that too big a match up (cause we don't know how he'll react).

Magee looks to lack the strength to beat the elite in the division. Although beatable, Beyer, Lucas, Mundine, Green etc, are I think a notch above

Sanavia, Siaca etc are on or near Magee's level, and he has a shot against them.

The trouble is, why is anyone going to give Magee a shot, Reid is a bigger name and has a profile which gives him a good shot at getting a title. To most of the top men in the division, Magee is merely an opponent, nobody outside of the UK has heard of him.

I think Reid is capable of winning a title in the current division, although Sanavia and Siaca may just outbox him. I would give Reid a shot to beat Mundine, whose chin isn't the best.

It seems to me that unless Magee can secure a rematch with Reid he'll be in a state of limbo with regards to his career moving forwards. Despite the lack of any real quality in the division, he's still not good enough to challenge for a world title, and as people have suggested, he'll have trouble getting those fights anyway.

I think he should swallow his pride and stick to the domestic scene or at best the european scene. IMO, there are winnable fights there for him, which i don't think is the case at or around world level.

Thank your lucky stars!

I actually think that Magee might just turn up in a WT fight at some point, if he's prepared to take short money. He's a former 'World' champ, with just 1 loss to a former Big 3 World champ, and a victory over another. He's sellable to the casual fan, and his last two fights have made him look suseptible to any half-decent puncher, lacking an strength, possibly not punching as hard as it first looked against lower-level opposition and relatively easy to bully into not really letting his hands go.

Maybe I'm being cynical here, but FW isn't the only promoter to hand-pick opponents who he feels are safe, but who he can dress up as quality. Steve Holdsworth on EuroSport often makes the observation that fighters can find it easier getting fights after weaknesses have been exposed. I wouldn't be too surprised if Magee popped up as a voluntary for someone down the line.

If Beyer wins the title again I could see Magee fighting him, just because he has a loss on his record. I still think Magee has a decent punch, he just doesn't let them go often enough. I don't rate Beyer at all, I would really fancy Magee to beat him. Beyers heart is no longer in boxing it seems (was it ever). Green can punch sure, but can he take one?
