Marvin Hagler,No one could last in a dogfight with Hagler
From 1980 since Hagler knockout Alan Minter to 1985 when he knockout Thomas Hearns also to 1986 when he knockout John Mugabi. No one he could last in the ring with Hagler for 15 whole rounds but Roberto Duran until his very last fight with Sugar Ray Leonard for 12 rounds.I mean no one could hardly last in the ring with Hagler from 1980 to 1987.

Nonsense. I'll name two. James Toney and Mike McCallum!

He didn't knock out Minter, it was stopped on cuts.

Re: Marvin Hagler,No one could last in a dogfight with Hagler
The thing is, Hagler only took to dogfighting later in his career when all his speed had gone, prior to this, he was much of a boxer/puncher.
He was slowing down when he fought Hearns & Tommy played right into Marvin's hands by trying to KO him.
Mugabi also stood & traded with Hagler which was another stupid mistake because Marvin's chin was so good.
By 1987, his speed had all but gone & Leonard did not play into his hands & try & and trade with Hagler & he managed to prevail, albeit in a very close fight.
Hagler had to chin to go to war with anybody, but he was susceptible to cuts, so that might have hampered him had he chosen to be a dogfighter earlier in his career.

Herol Graham and Sumbu Kalambey would have posed a pretty serious threat in the mid 80's.walshb wrote:Nonsense. I'll name two. James Toney and Mike McCallum!

I think Michael Nunn could had a chance to go the full distance with Hagler
Re: Marvin Hagler,No one could last in a dogfight with Hagler
Agreed, Sumbu Kalambay in particular would have been serious nuisance and a possible threat....but almost precisely because he would have avoided a dog fight with Hagler whilst having the resilience to see through those torrid rounds when he would have been forced to do battle.Herol Graham and Sumbu Kalambey would have posed a pretty serious threat in the mid 80's.
Being hard and trying to force Hagler back at this juncture was just not smart - even for the excellent Mugabi - so the OP has a point. Sibson often gets derided but he was built like a brick outhouse and a properly ripped, fit man who hit hard and yet Marvin pretty much had Tony on toast.
Only an elite group of tough very rugged box-punchers (active at this juncture) represented any kind of threat....Kalambay being the stand out.
Graham would have been tricky as well but ultimately I don't think he had enough pop or sheer physicality to keep Hagler from breaking through at some point. But as a fan, I see Herol dancing and jabbing his way to the biggest British middleweight win since Turpin beat Robinson!!

I have to say that came as a surprise when I read about the cuts above. My impression was that Hagler duffed him up inside 3 .... I assumed that's when the ref or corner said 'enough' then it started raining coins and bottles.......was that predominantly racism or just your basic hooliganery?GPTM1403 wrote:nit picking mood that dayClivePatrickLyons wrote:GPTM1403 wrote:He didn't knock out Minter, it was stopped on cuts.![]()

Although I never saw it that result jumped out at me because I read that Minter was the "undisputed Champion" or something.
Was Alan Minter very good - and how far up a list of British world champions might he appear?
Re: Marvin Hagler,No one could last in a dogfight with Hagler
I know it's a little before the time frame, but in there first bout, in the late rounds Vito Antuofermo was waving Hagler to come on and fight and Marvin was backing away. I still think Hagler's an alltime great, but don't get carried away.
Re: Marvin Hagler,No one could last in a dogfight with Hagler
Minter was taking a pasting - but actually hadn't been down and was tough. He cut up as easily as Henry Cooper from what I remember and I reckon it wouldn't have lasted much more anyway when it was stopped. He was trying to be too brave and brawl too much by the stoppage - possibly because he also knew the cuts were bad. He was landing OK but never really carried the kind of power to get Hagler to back off and Hagler was boxing better and just landing and landing.magwitch wrote:

Antuofermo once said Minter was the one who surprised him the most with strength. He was a good boxer but not great, probably been better middleweights but then he won the undisputed title at a tough time so got to give him some credit.
The racist incident has really hung around him but from what I can remember someone in his entourage (or hanging around them) shouted the comment and Minter then got himself caught up in it. Don't know if he has ever said anything else about it. Funnily enough it was, from memory, exactly the same comment as everyone excuses Hopkins saying about Calzaghe so there you go.
I always got the impression the riot was as much about the fact people didn't know that much about Hagler and Minter was the local guy. Also it was suggested at the time that many believed the cuts were cause by butts. Seem to remember watching the fight back quite a few times and never seeing anything to justify that view. Was all caused by punches. So probably a mix of racists, hooligans, bad losers and the odd touch of alcohol thrown in.

I don't see any MW really getting the better of the Marvin of the early 1980s in a slugfest. When he fought Bennie Briscoe in 78 he boxed on the back foot for most of the fight, Bennie was made out of similar stuff too.
