I have recently watched the Larry Holmes v Carl Williams fight from 1985.

Before the fight, in an interview when asked about equalling Rocky's 49 and 0 record, Larry says that he's not that bothered because Marciano's record is fake and that it is common knowledge that he fought his brothers on numerous ocasions who used different names.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Larry is one of the greatest heavies of all time but had a sour approach to the sport and often steered what should have been a casual quote down the path of something more sickening. This is just one of too many examples.

bennie, do you have any info on one of the Rock's early victims, Jimmy Weeks? Any biographical info and, in particular, photos would be great. I've read several times over the years that Rocky did box his brother Sonny in at least one amateur exhibition where Sonny used a nom de guerre, but in the pros the only opponent I've ever had my doubts about is Weeks.

Holmes is my number 1 all time favourite fighter and i got the chance to see him fight,although well past his best,he still put up a decent show against Holyfield.I think he was affected by the whole Cooney, white versus black thing leading up to their classic fight and having suffered severe hardship as a child and having to fight his way through tough contenders to get his chance against Norton,then along comes cooney and he's getting the same pay as the champ,that wouldn't have helped,he also wouldn't sign his autograph for me,still i'd still clean his boots for him,the man was an awesome champion.

I think Larry always felt he didn't get the respect he deserved, because he was the guy who followed Ali.

I can imagine how that might make you a bit sour.

I'm just saying that Larry didn't get the respect his career deserved, and that it soured his outlook on the sport - it's pretty well documented how kranky Larry was during his career!

Did Larry give you a reason for not signing your book mate? Sounds like a strange one to turn down to me does that, given that you've gone and bought a book about him
I didn't know Holmes was brought up in hardship. Yes, a very good heavyweight by what I've heard/ read.

Holmes was in a band,singer i believe and he was selling tapes of his music,he said he would only sign his name in my autograph book if i bought one of the tapes,which i refused,so he refused lol,still worship the man though,what a heart,what a chin,and arguably one of the best jabs ever .

Certainly the best jab of any heavyweight champ - rapid, accurate, and deployed with withering regularity.

Can't remember who said it,one of Holmes's former victims i think,but they described Holmes's jab as like being hit with a broom handle with broken glass on the end.

Id bet on a prime Holmes v a prime Tyson.

Possibly, but I reckon he'd have had to survive some scary moments in the first 4 rounds.

bit of an athlete was Holmes wasn't he. More than just a jab - but the jab counted for a lot. Yeah, with his height too and his confidence in his ability I could have seen a prime Holmes beating a prime Tyson. Would require a cool head that job.
