This whole thing where boxers pretend to hate each other....

Post by ILikeBeer »

It's so boring. It happens every fight.

Does it ever actually fool anybody? :-?

Sometimes the hate is real.

Errol Christie & Mark Kaylor genuinely hated each other.

Nigel Benn genuinely hated Chris Eubank, although I got the impression that Eubank didn't hate Benn, but loved to wind him up.

Joe Frazier hated Muhammad Ali & took that hate to his grave, which was really sad, because I don't believe Ali meant a word of it.

But you're right, the majority of the time it's total BS.

It fools the majority of people the majority of the time. When all they see or hear about boxing is the hype in the papers for a big fight, it's not surprising

I think AJ and Whyte genuinely dislike eachother, we have been hearing stories about their fallouts long before they were mooted to fight.
But Campbell and Coyle was a different story, it was cringeworthy.

I was saddened to hear how Frazier was affected by the comments.

Some of the stuff all said was utterly vile.

Although he had a cheeky chappy persona let's not forget that he was a wife beating, mysoginist, homophobic, racist and sexist.

A great boxer, but the other stuff is often overlooked.

There's a cracking video online, one by that desperate goofball kid Eli Sechback who clings onto Robert Garcia...

Anyway Chavez Jr is working the heavy bag and the conversation is about Morales & MAB. Chavez knows the story so he tells it to Robert Garcia who then roughly translates. It's pretty funny, something to do with them having a good old game of footy of all things when they were young in a boxing camp. MAB put the boot in on Morales, EM lost the plot, the 2 teams ended up in a barney and they despised each other ever since

I remember Barrerra on Ringside saying after they both retired he tried to bury the hatchet with Morales who basically told him to go fvck himself

Agreed. Alis actions were despicable toward a man who helped him him when he was down and out in his career.
Seeing the story of what really went down between Ali and Frazier made me sour toward Ali also...

Bellew is the most cringeworthy fighter of our generation, evrything that came out of his mouth was BS an didnt make any sense, tried his hardest to have a "grudge match" with Cleverly but Cleverly is too smart to fall for his s**t.

Genuine needle. I've said on here before but Joshua v Johnson I was in a pub that randomly Whyte happened to be in....he really doesn't like Joshua, dunno about the other way though obviously.

I dunno. DeGale gave him a run for his money going; "Ugly Kid. Ugleee" 1,487 times per interview leading up to the Groves fight.

Pretty sure Nelson didn't, it was all stage managed. I think Carl had some genuine beef with Nelson and Ingle over the way they went about things - I think it was the second Eubank fight in Sheffield where he grabbed the mic post-fight and you could tell he was rattled. I mean, it was all a bit theatrical but I don't think any of it was "hate".

I think its unfortunate, given the tragedys that can sometimes happen in the sport, needle, real or otherwise is more grist to the abolitionists mill.

I loved the Crolla/Murray build up where they had a complete laugh parodying "beef" in the build up, had a really hard, no holds barred, entertaining battle and then had a discussion during the post fight about whose house they were going to watch the replay at. I think they agreed on a bbq at Murrays the next afternoon if I remember right.

Of course boxers have to be competitive, like all sports people do, but proper nastiness should be left for the nasty, spoilt little kids of the premiership.

Agree with the above poster.

Crolla Murray was fight of the year, and proved that you dont need to sell a fight with pretend hatred.

I understand if a fighter needs to get into a mindset where he doesnt like the guy on fight night, but the silly arguments that start a month before are so tiresome.

It embarrasses the sport.

Don't you hate it when one of the fighters has to stop mid-rant to consult his script or has to put on his glasses to read the teleprompter? :OhYes:

Well on that occasion he was pretty dismissive of Joshua's performance, as the commentary was on and Sky were wetting their knickers about the destruction of Johnson he basically said what any boxing fan would that we learned nothing from that and he needed to be put in with someone who wanted to win/would challenge him etc and that he fancied the job himself. He didn't slag Joshua off or anything just said he didn't really get along and that he wanted to be the one to derail the hype train sort of thing.

He was actually a really nice bloke and seemed to know his boxing! Had loads of time to talk to anyone who wanted to that was in the pub and bearing in mind the state I was in - fair play to him ha. He's a big lump too, maybe I'll be made to look silly when it happens but I genuinely think he will give Joshua a few scares when they fight.
