Thoughts on Gary Mason's story

I always absolutely loved watching Gary fight and the way he conducted his career with a smile and a wink.

And at times there was more than a hint that he was much more than just a charismatic British level ducker-and-diver who could slug a bit. The guy hit properly hard, was built like an absolute JCB bulldozer and seemed to have good stamina, the right spirit and quick hands as well.

What do people think he could have done if a few things had been different for Gary?

I am thinking of stuff like what he'd have produced with some meaningful fights (that taught him something) before going in with Lennox and if he'd been more of a gym rat like his stablemate Bruno. I thought Gary was actually the novice in that fight despite what his record said.

Gary apparently liked his fun and was not a boxing fanatic and Lawless was perhaps a man inclined to plot an overly conservative route for his heavyweights. So what does a fully-charged Mason with better matchmaking and no eye problems achieve...I think he could have come back from losing to Lennox and been a real force. Sadly, it never happened.

Gary was a fringe contender in an era stacked with talent, he fought competently and bravely against a young Lewis until his eye gave out. He'd have been hard pressed to win a world title in the early 90s.

x2, its a shame he didn't fight Bruno could've been a cracker although id perhaps favour Bruno with that jab of his

I think Mason was more of a 'natural talent' for boxing than Bruno, FWIW.
