Boxing legend Frank Bruno admitted to hospital after bipolar disorder relapse

Post by Boxerbeetle »

Frank Bruno has been readmitted to hospital after suffering a relapse in his battle with bipolar disorder.

The boxing legend, who has been sectioned three times in the past 12 years, went -voluntarily with a “severe bout of depression”, according to reports from the Mirror newspaper.

It came after friends and family grew concerned about him.

Speaking to the Mirror, one close friend said: “It is terribly sad but Frank has been struggling for the last few weeks now and needed to get some help.

“He has taken this step in a bid to try to make sure he gets better and back to his best as soon as he can.

“All that matters now is that Frank focuses on getting well and his recovery. Frank’s a fighter and this is a battle he is determined to win.”

His spokesman Dave Davies added: “After a very busy period Frank decided to seek medical assistance to help with a severe bout of depression.”

Frank was due to talk about his glittering career at a dinner in Lincoln on Friday night but pulled out due to his illness.

Boxer David Haye is now set to host the event.

He inspired me to start training, I'd never seem a physique like it. Some how it always impressed me more than Arnold, Bertil Fox, Franco Columbo and the like. I just wish his mind was as strong. All the best Franklin.

Grew up in his era, loved to watch and support him in days that seemed a lot simpler and boxing seemed easier to follow. Good luck Frank.

Oh, just saw this on Eric Guy facebook, "just got this message......Learning the news that Big Frank has had a relapse in his Bipolar and has been re admitted into hospital., .. get well Frank, know what I mean". Good ole Eric, mate to the stars, in the know, gets the nudge nudge wink wink, the texts from insiders right

Well I had to comment - "You mean you read it on Boxrec"?

Hope he can recover quickly, any sort of mental illness is like a week in he'll, it must be even worse when you're well known. Best wishes to him.

Unfortunately it's a lifelong condition, and he will have relapses. That's the nature of the condition.

That's a shame. I met him at a Q and A type event a few months ago and he seemed to be doing really well. A true gent. He was happy to sign anything you wanted free of charge, much to the annoyance of his agent. Hope he gets better soon.

A gentle giant is Frank. Always been a fan.

At least he is getting support, and honest enough to not hide the situation, which can be half the problem.

Dark days but plenty of sunlight at the end of the tunnel for the big man.

X2. Only time I've cried at a boxing match. Got swept away with the romance of it at the end.

I don't know much about the disorder so am just asking a serious question but can repeated head punches plus documented cocaine and I think Marijuana usage cause or at least worsen this disorder.

Bruno got me into boxing

Could it even cause the disorder?

I very much doubt it could cause bipolar disorder, but it definitely wouldn't help anyone who already had it.

He obv so has some demons, but I think he has a handle on it, got a family around him, and knows where to go to get some time out.

Came in here to say the same thing. He seemed all over the shop last week and was a bizarre interview.

Hope he gets through this lapse

I've mentioned it recently, yesterday in fact. I've met him twice and he's never seemed right. Everything was forced.

Feel a bit mean-spirited at the moment as have been discussing Frank's personality over on the Boxers of the Past forum and I made mention of the fact that Lawless and Duff crafted a cuddly/approachable public image for Frank whilst he still had plenty of demons and anger inside of him. Should really have made mention of the fact that it was his mental illness - as yet undiagnosed - was almost certainly the cause.

Boxing does take a toll on some many people that I sometimes do feel guilty about loving the sport so much....George Francis who was perhaps the man closest to Frank when he fought ended-up so unhappy that he commited suicide. George had family bereavments that he took hard but he was also apparently lost without being in the sport.
