Re: Another death on the unlicensed circuit
There are so many horrific mismatches on white-collar cards, they need much tighter regs. I've seen barely-fit guys with no experience and poor defence get shredded by ex-amateurs and borderline pros. More than once I've seen the guy under attack lift up a knee in a foetal panic when cornered.
Self-interested promoters and crowds of idiots calling for blood. It's fair to say it's not my cup of tea.

Re: Another death on the unlicensed circuit
Sad news. One of my mates is thinking about doing some white collar boxing despite having zero fighting experience, not even sparring. I've been trying to explain the dangers of it and that he would have no real idea of the level of opponent he might face, but he doesn't seem to get it, he thinks it'll all just be office workers who've never had a fight between them.
Re: Another death on the unlicensed circuit
Yep this is what puts me off the white collar stuff totally. They just seem to chuck anyone in with anyone and watch the fireworks. If I was to get into doing boxing it would be through the amateur route, not this junk.Grilling Machine wrote:There are so many horrific mismatches on white-collar cards, they need much tighter regs. Sad news, thoughts with the lads family.
I'm actually going to my first white colar even soon (only because a mate is fighting on the card), is it really that bad across the board or does it depend on the promoter/organiser of the particular event?

Re: Another death on the unlicensed circuit
The trouble is, you just never know the background of some of the fighters. The promoter/organiser might ask all the right questions, but what's stopping someone pretending they are a total novice despite having loads of combat experience? If they then get matched against a genuine novice, it's asking for trouble.ste1983 wrote:Sad news, thoughts with the lads family.

Re: Another death on the unlicensed circuit
I think anyone who puts themselves forward for these shows without any previous experience is a complete bollock-head.
Boxing ain't squash, you can't play at it - it's very risky, even for trained professionals, let alone some middle aged pratt who fancies a go, after talking about it with work colleagues down the pub.
I met some guy once in the pub - he was pissed as a fart, and he had a white collar fight coming up, he was about 4 stone overweight, and 45 years of age, with no prior experience, and he was still smoking and drinking in the run up. His opponent was an ex-army bloke who boxed in the army, and was 15 years younger than him.
I told him he was going to get the shite kicked out of him - he did, luckily he wasn't badly hurt, as I ran into about 2 years later and he was alive enough to tell the tale.
However, why on earth would anyone make that match - it's asking for serious trouble.

It could also be down to the people that are training him though.jamesmcdonnell wrote:I think anyone who puts themselves forward for these shows without any previous experience is a complete bollock-head.

There are a couple of lads in my office that are up for it and would happily have a row, but the people that take them on should be very clear that its serious and should not be taken lightly.
Who in their right mind says to someone (Who is 45 and 4 stone over weight) 'you are good to go, i'll get it arranged....and then match them up with someone in a completely different class.
I might be green around the gills but that's clearly not right. It maybe that the person training him was telling him wrong information that he was believing.
Awful stuff
Back on topic, RIP to the person involved and his family. Tragedy.

whether such cases are in the majority or minority I wouldn't know but i have seen a few shows where the matches were clearly well-made

it's getting to the point where i would have quite enjoyed watching him get punched in the face, herejamesmcdonnell wrote:He was laughing when he told me - I remember thinking to myself 'laugh now mate, because you won't be laughing afterwards.'Counter-puncher wrote:if alarm bells weren't ringing from those aspects, the bloke's a fvcking idiot and deserved every lump and cut he got.jamesmcdonnell wrote:

He was rather a bell-end.
Re: Another death on the unlicensed circuit
Horrible to hear. I just want to mention though that it is not only white collar boxing that lines up complete mismatches. I have seen many a card where an undefeated pro with a good amateur background is put in the ring with a lad who -literally- cannot box. One night I saw a 7-0, pro and looks like he is carved out of rock, was put up against a skinny bloke on his debut who tried a two-armed jab which ended up being the only punch he threw. All over in 40 seconds. The card in question had six fights, four of which were first round KOs and another a second round KO. All the opponents had been rounded up under the name of a neighbouring town's MMA club. It was sickening to watch, and the matchmaker should have been struck off in my opinion.

Quality varies hugely. Most opponents come from the same stable. You often get a decent boxer blatantly carrying a local ticket seller. You can spot it a mile off if you know what you're looking at.

Re: Another death on the unlicensed circuit
Not seen much white collar stuff but a young lad I trained alongside for years started doing it a few years ago. Seen videos of his fights where he is stopping tomato cans and the celebrating as if he had just won a world title. I don't know how anyobody could take pride in beating up someone who clearly doesn't have a clue.
Re: Another death on the unlicensed circuit
I think it's quite rotten now,all about ticket sales and no regard for safety, weight mismatches, standard of opponent mismatches,I've even seen paramedics say someone shouldn't fight for it to swept under the carpet, and sometimes it's down to the boxers(use that loosely),turning up at the gym with there gloves hanging from there bag thinking there all this and that and a bag of chip

Re: Another death on the unlicensed circuit
I see all the usual crap is beginning again.... please remember how this all transpired last time.
the lad (called Ace Dinero) died of a heart attack, nothing boxing related (again, but hey dont let that get in the way of the truth), its just circumstantial that he had boxed earlier that night. Hence the scarce coverage anywhere. I think the papers learned from their lessons of using boxing/promoter as a scapegoat last time which all proved rather needless.

No one's mentioned how he died, just general discussion about white collar/unlicensed boxing.Looking On wrote:I see all the usual crap is beginning again.... please remember how this all transpired last time.

If he has died of a heart attack then it's too early to say whether it was related to his fight. Fit, healthy, young men don't just suddenly drop dead, if he's had a heart attack then it could well be down to some sort of heart defect/condition, that could cause a heart attack at any time, but the risk can also be aggravated by several factors. Might have nothing to do with boxing, but you do have to question the medical, if there was one at all, a proper medical should pick up things like that.
