Mike Towell / Matchmakers

Post by dalcumly »

Another inside the distance count out win for Towell last night in Glasgow. I'm trying to remain sensible about his prospects, but really struggling. If you like to see a 'fight' as opposed to a boxing match then watch this lad. And - can he punch!!
There are those who say he takes too many punches coming in and a good counter puncher might be able to deal with him. Well, lets see !!! I've said it before on this forum, but I'll stick my neck out again - British champion , just for starters.
I think he's out next month against Willie Warburton. I've seen Willie many times, and he's excellent at what he does. I respect and admire him but I've a message - be very careful.

Matchmakers. Towell's opponent last night from Estonia ( I can't spell his name!!) was not your usual waste of space , although his record might imply that. He was a really tough lad who came to give it his all. Went toe to toe, took some real hefty shots, kept coming back and pushed Towell all the way. He was stopped with 15 seconds to go, struggling to get to his feet after being laid out flat on his back. Really strong, no fat, determined. I'd like to see him get more work in the UK. Trust me - a good test for anyone.

Heard some good things about Mike & would love to see him fight live, but until he gets past the Eastern European inports & journeymen none of the questions you have posed will be answered.
In fact if he is as good as you say when he steps up in class the people he fights will at least be coming to fight unlike some of the journeymen.

Towell early career draw doesn't bode well for a career above area level, esp with the lack of promotional backing.

This is the kind of attitude that sustains non event match ups. People believe if they get a draw or a loss on their record then their career is over and they can't go any further. I could name a dozen fighters with dodgy results in their first few fights that went on to have great careers. This obsession with records is a joke it tells you very little.

I think Towell's manager is Tommy Gilmour who I believe has always enjoyed a good relationship with Barry Hearn. Promotional backing might exist.

He should change his name from 'Iron' Mike Towell to something like Mike 'Tea' Towell. Or 'Beach'....or if he wants to keep a hard substance theme...'beech'

I agree, although I also agree with Coco !

An early career blip shouldn't necessarily cause long term damage, however whenever I see a "prospect" whos record is littered with loss-record imports and includes a loss/draw (in this case the lad only ever won one fight) then it is not unreasonable for alarm bells to start ringing.

Such a blip can be as a result of talent or (lack of) application - either way, not a good sign.

Of course anyone who hasn't seen Towell in the flesh is quite right to doubt his potential . There are so many ticket sellers who build up false records and then fail when they face quality. It's all down to opinion at this stage.
But you just occasionally get a feeling about someone, and of course when you make bold predictions you leave yourself open to ridicule. I think I might be right for once.

Ive not seen Towell box in the flesh only bits on youtube and he is like a bull but i would like to see him cracking on after assuming he takes care of Warburton who now and again can spring an upset,i strongly fancy Mikey to get the W

Im not sure why he's going back to 6 rounders since winning the Scottish,he had a couple scheduled 10 rounders then here he is back at 6 and i think the Warburton fight is 6 too

I look forward to seeing him stepping up a level and getting an eliminator for the British or Commonwealth titles,or even in Prizefighter if their doing another Welterweight edition,Towell looks as though he's made for that format

Gilmour needs to put his money where his mouth is and get a respectable opponent over to Dundee for him

An early career draw, or loss, to a Mark Ramsey type is a result you can learn and improve from.
When you are fighting the usual suspects you expect the genuine prospect to make a real statement. Knocking out or dominating the guys that normally stick around makes you sit up.
Instead he hasn't been moved up in over 2 years as a pro, and has been dropping rounds in his points win.
He hasn't been risked outside of Scotland either. This all suggests he is not quite the prospect you think.

His draw with Martin McCord wasn't a draw lol, they have a draw to prevent a riot in the cleland miners club ha, both sets of fans were on heckle pins and ready to explode, believe it or not but the size of venue etc you would understand ha. For me I think Mike has went back since the pagan fight regarding match making but for me I feel he has a real chance, he's relentless and very strong come forward fighter. Gets caught a lot though but at welterweight I believe he will hold a massive size difference over most of them. I would have liked to see him in with Denton vassell after the warburton fight. There is loads of potential Scottish clashes he could be part of with matty Mcallister, Craig Kelly. Soon see,

I was just going to say his draw with McCord wasn't really draw was a win , but Defo after warburton he needs to step up , if you want to see strong welter weights the laddie from Greenock Sam ball looks strong as an ox. Him and Mike be a good fight

I've seen Warburton fight in the flesh about 8 or 9 times and I'd describe him as a very good journeyman in that he can win the occasional round, doesn't take too many clean punches, and unless his opponent is 'on his game' he'll sneak a win. I saw his fight with Sam Ball and that was the only occasion he's taken a battering and was lucky to hear the final bell.
I also saw Towell's fight with McCauley. I've seen Kevin live several times and he likes to joke around and land the occasional 'stiffener'. That was another case when due to the pressure from Towell, I didn't see any jokes and I saw several times a look of shock on McCauleys face. He clawed his way to the final bell.
Ball v Towell would be one in a couple of years time.
There are some boxers you speak to when you realise that although they are decent enough people, you sense a 'nasty ' streak somewhere inside. That is what carries you through in tough fights, and is what sometimes separates champions from contenders. I've spoke to Towell several times, and he has it. If you took him to Birmingham, London, Manchester where ever, it wouldn't faze him in the slightest, and I'm pretty sure if he was a victim of a 'hometown' decision the stewards would have to restrain him !!
So, I agree its time , after Warburton, to move him on.

To be fair your analysis of the Macauley fight not entirely true, mikey was superb first half of fight but towards end he was tiring and mcauley started landing shots on him. As for being away fighter realistically his style won't change he's gonna go for it no matter where he is. He had a fight in Canada fall through before too, he seems up for it Tommy just needs to realise
He's hindering him rather than helping, let him have a big fight, he wins good loses still learns and young enough to come back. I would love to see him and Sam ball though. He's very good

Here is a post you previously wrote about the Macauley/Towell Jamie? Make your mind up

mikey towell won points c Kevin mcauley, mikey was really good and got to try out new things , his work rate over 10x3 was excellent and in 10th only round he lost for me easing off to the win, excited to see him in action against scottish fighters at moment, he's still young and although a talent don't wanna see him move up in level yet, why would we when he will never be in a boring fight, learn every fight and when he's ready get him in the ring for a british, can sell a ticket also , sold 35 dinner tickets which is good going! Hope Tommy

Make my mind up? I said he tired toward end which I say he lost 10th but landing shots don't mean you are winning the round, that was also say 4 or 5 fights ago and he hasn't moved up yet. Nothing there to suggest o have changed my mind, I believe Tommy needs to step him up. Get him a fight in Dundee he sells tickets. Why at you researching my posts anyways ha, sad

Ive not seen him box, but looking at his record would agree with this. The genuine future stars have a better paper record than this guy. Time will tell.
