THE WBU WORLD TITLE

Post by biglefthook »

what's people's views on the wbu world title ? I know in england its only mbc shows there fought for.
but I see the slagging the titles get but I'm just wondering why pregrudge or trash a young prospect or even a contender at the end of there careers the chance to have a nice belt and be a world champion.
the wbf (world boxing Federation there is a few wbf's) the iba and the ibo are great run organisations.
particularly the ibo which has some big namesas there world champions.
Roy jones has won a host of theese miner titles and good on him or anyone else trying to make a living and get some belts for the mantelpiece.
it wasn't so long ago the BBB of C was happy for Ricky Hatton to have the wbu belt and defend it 12 or 13 times

It served Hatton well but Hatton was never recognised as a champ til he beat Tszyu. At the end of the day it isn't a world belt. Anyone can fight for it. If I was a pro and won it I would be proper proud but it isn't a world belt.

The fact that it appears and is fought for on MBC shows tells me all I need to know to have an opinion

I think that shows the quality of the belt with that statement.

It's easy for people to point to the likes of Ricky etc when looking at the WBU title, but they miss two crucial points.

1) There are more than version of the WBU (one run by Rio for his MBC shows) and another run out of Germany.

2) Neither are the proper WBU belt that was fought for on these shores by much of Warren's stable in the last 90s to mid 2000s. That organisation was run by a bloke called Jon Robinson and was gradually fazed out after Robinson's death.

The only thing the current versions share with the original is the same name.

It's rips off casual fans who think they are watching a world title fight, it always was and still is a 'title' for fighters (and promoters) who are 99/100 not world class, plain and simple.

That applies to many mainstream belts.

True, even more so with the WBA now and the WBO in the 90's.

No the BBBofC didn't ban it - unfortunately the BBBofC have a policy of only allowing WBC, WBO, WBA, IBF and IBO championships to be fought for in the UK.

Was the BBBoC recognition of the WBU title retracted when the original organisation died?
Is it that they have never recognised either of the newer organisations using the name?

The World Boxing Union created by Jon Robinson was in my view THE World Boxing Championship - OK, as someone not from the boxing world at that time, I'm sure that's because nearly every World title fight on UK TV at that time was WBU.

As someone on here has pointed out there are currently two versions, more or less, the German version was always known as the WBUv and the version I am involved with is the American owned version

That aside the reason I became involved is for a more nostalgic reason, or romantic as those that know me well would say. The WBU was the first World Championship organisation that was created and based right here in the UK and I wanted to bring it back home.

Unfortunately the current owners were not willing to sell it to me, however they were willing to license me the European rights.

I am proud to be associated with the WBU and even prouder to have so many former WBU champions involved with WBU Europe and what's more I will not give up trying to get the WBU back here as well as build it into a universally approved Championship that the top boxers would be proud to compete for.

It is the same belt as the one Hatton had thought isn't it? By that I mean the design?

Not true Roy Jones has never been a miner or fought for a miners title. Southern Area champ means more than WBU. Ricky became World champion when he beat the zoo man.

Nothing personal fella, but boxing does not need yet another fake bauble, there are enough already clouding reality without trying to revive one that thankfully faded into obscurity.

Ah, so they didn't ban it, they just decided they'd no longer sanction any WBU title fights because they don't recognise it. Pretty similar, no?

Agree 100%

How many times in early 2000s did Headline fights fall through and refunds get refused because tickets simply stated "world championship boxing" and there was still a spurious WBU title fight on undercard!

Example, Johnny Nelson WBO cruiser weight opponent dropped out late notice, so Nelson fought some Latvian at couple days notice for WBU heavyweight title! Nelson duly won by complete shut out and the show, and refunds, were saved.

Which 'world' do you become champion of when you win these minority titles?

There is only one world and the notion there can be 20 plus different 'world' champions in the same weight division at the same time is really quite laughable.
