That is all.

Also, Larry should have held on more to survive that 4th round.

No version of Larry could beat Tyson. I say this as a huge Holmes fan.
Tyson is just way too fast and accurate with his right hand. He would catch him eventually.

Re: Larry Holmes vs Mike Tyson
I don't believe there is anyway a 39 year old Larry Holmes would beat prime Mike Tyson, even with a couple of tuneups.
Holmes would have to be about 30 years old & in his absolute pomp to stand any chance against peak Tyson.

The way some people have been arguing lately, the new school of thought seems to be that we are supposed to completely ignore the stages of a fighter's career.
Re: Larry Holmes vs Mike Tyson
Even with Tuneups, the aged Larry that fought Tyson would've been overwhelmed. He might've lasted more rounds than 4, but the result would've ultimately been the same.
I can see a Prime Larry getting a decision over Tyson, but even at his best it's not a sure thing. I do think Larry is a much better fighter overall, but I figure this would've been a hard matchup for him at any stage.

Pretty much agree with this. If Holmes would have not been rusty, he would have made it more difficult, but Tyson would still have won.
In their primes, Holmes would probably win but Tyson would have a chance.

Re: Larry Holmes vs Mike Tyson
I should reword my first post, if Holmes had a couple tune up fights before Tyson I think Holmes would have had a better than 50% chance of winning. If Holmes was 10 years younger with no rust, I'd give him a 70% of winning.
Re: Larry Holmes vs Mike Tyson
Tyson was unlike anything Holmes ever faced just too good.I think every version of holmes gets stopped

This would be one of my dream fights if both in their primes could of gone either way

Holmes by late stoppage on clear decision in their primes. A more prepared old Holmes goes the distance but losesca Dec.

- Yes, the untutored and illiterate usually dominate modern forums, but let's be clear, big butted Lar fell victim to diminishing IQ from the spare % ratio of his peanut cranium as to his big buttocks.
He trained at his personal gym for over a year as he stalked and belittled out Tyson at every fight. After his crucifixion, his unwashed besotted fans invented porkies to excuse his gross failure.. Fact is that style by Dempsey, Frazier, and Tyson always Trumps him, but go ahead and moan and wring limpid hands, anyone getting knocked down by Butterbean ain't any kind of great. Poor record against title holders, time to wake up and smell the burnt coffee.

Prime Tyson wins at any stage of Holmes' career, although I do think Larry lasts the distance more often than not.

Re: Larry Holmes vs Mike Tyson
Tyson stops any Holmes warm up or not! Tyson was just too good at that time. Remember he didn't just beat Holmes he destroyed him easily, pretty conclusive I think.

We can only hope "this is all " from "DrunkenBoxer"
Also: I want to hear from "SoberBoxer" at some point....to allow for equal time.
This is more.

It's a toss up for me. Both were great fighters in their respective primes.
Both in my view beat the OVERRATED Lennox Lewis.

Larrys fat buttocks return was embarrassing ,he did it for the money but didnt prepare properly while denigrating tyson at every stop on a,deeply personal level

Larry Holmes on his response to Don King when approached to fight Mike Tyson:
"What I remember was Don King knocking at my door around 9 at night. I was retired two years. Don said he wanted me to fight somebody he said he knew I could beat. I asked him who, and he said, 'Mike Tyson.' I said I can't beat Mike Tyson.
"Don said, 'What if I give you 3 ½ million dollars?,' and I said, 'Where's Mike at?' I'm just glad he didn't kill me. He knocked me down a few times, but I didn't feel it because the first time he hit me I was numb.
"After the fight Mike said he loved me and I said, 'Why'd you knock out my ass?' Mike's a great guy. I'm glad Mike beat me that day, or else I'd have nothing to talk about."

Mike Tyson on the fight:
"It was a great opportunity to be in the ring with one of the great fighters of all time. It was a milestone in my career. He didn't have time to prepare. I never fought the great Larry Holmes. I had no delusions. By all means, I didn't fight the Holmes who fought Muhammad Ali.
"I was very objective in the ring, nothing personal, but I'd have hit my mother. If I had mercy on him, he may have knocked my ass out. He didn't have enough time to prepare when he fought me. Don didn't give him the opportunity."

Re: Larry Holmes vs Mike Tyson
I remember Mike Tyson saying during the post fight interview that he couldn't have beaten a prime Larry Holmes.
Whether he really meant it is a another thing though.
