Will we see Lucas Browne in the ring again?
Will we see Lucas Browne in the boxing ring again? I think it is a valid question in light of his positive post-fight test to the banned substance clenbuterol.
Browne is only days from his 37th birthday and unless he has a miraculous change of fortune he is in for at least a 6 month suspension.
The WBA state in their rules: “No boxer who has tested positive for prohibitive substances can be rated, retain a title, or be permitted to fight in a sanctioned bout for a period of no less than six months from the date of the positive test.”
It also states: “If the challenger wins the world championship bout and his anti-drug test is positive and the losing champions has a negative result, then, the champion shall retain his title no matter losing it, and the challenger shall be disqualified and shall not be able to fight for a World Boxing Association title during the next two years, previous presentation of medical evidence proving his rehabilitation.”
So as things stand, the WBA will have little choice other than to declare Ruslan Chagaev retains his title and provide Lucas Browne with a minimum of a 6 month holiday.

It sure looks that way. Its a massive mental bump to an achievement taken away from him.
However can he still fight under the IBF/WBO or WBC rules?.

If he gets a suspension he can earn some coin being Parker or Joshua's punching bag in the gym

Unless he can find a loophole like Sam did I think he's up the creek. He may be back when any suspension is finished but his momentum is gone and at his age it will be hard to get back. Unfortunately I can only see him fighting at a lower level when he get's back. Hope I'm wrong.
Re: Will we see Lucas Browne in the ring again?
But Sam still followed the rules and sat out his ban given by German boxing board or what ever there called. When Sam returned he beat Sturm easy - and showed no sign of deterioration from the lay off.DA GOOSE wrote:Unless he can find a loophole like Sam did I think he's up the creek. So if he is stripped of the title then banned does he still get a top 10 rating?. If not its going to be a long slug to get back to where he was. Also financially he wont be seeing a cent from the Chagaev fight and lost money on the VADA testing.
Maybe the $1 Million to fight Haumono might be a good thing after all.

So while under suspension you don't retain your rating.
But I guess the question is, when you do come back do they assign you a rating around about where you were before the positive test? Or do they send you back down and you have to re-earn your rating?
I think in the case of Sam Soliman with the IBF when he came back he still had a pretty useful ranking, because he was very soon right back in contention for the title.

I think Oxifilirine the drug Sam had in his system was banned by WADA but not by the IBF.convict wrote:But Sam still followed the rules and sat out his ban given by German boxing board or what ever there called. So it was not banned under the IBF agreement that he signed for the Sturm fight and he retained his ranking. Lucas won't retain his ranking I don't think and Chagaev will fight Oquendo in the WBA tournament is what I think will happen. We will see.

The only loophole for Browne is to get hair testing done to prove his innocence, if it is accepted as evidenceDA GOOSE wrote:Unless he can find a loophole like Sam did I think he's up the creek. He would have to grow some hair first.GhostBoxing15 wrote:The only loophole for Browne is to get hair testing done to prove his innocence, if it is accepted as evidenceDA GOOSE wrote:Unless he can find a loophole like Sam did I think he's up the creek. Without hair the hair test can't be performed. That's why Ben Cousins shaved down when he heard they wanted to perform a hair test on him years ago.

Re: Will we see Lucas Browne in the ring again?
WBA still have Lucas Browne listed as 'WBA World Champion.'
http://www.wbanews.com/wba-ranking#.VwMMkPl95G9
Interestingly they have Chagaev ranked at 6 and below Oquendo who is at 4.

When he serves his suspension Lucas can't fight for a WBA title for 2 years.

The WBA also states: “If the challenger wins the world championship bout and his anti-drug test is positive and the losing champions has a negative result, then, the champion shall retain his title no matter losing it, and the challenger shall be disqualified and shall not be able to fight for a World Boxing Association title during the next two years.
He will have to go another route.

I read Browne past a lie detector test and was getting some underarm hair analysed, also there going to look at the B-sample. I'd think the B-sample will prob have the same result. All these things are not cheap, I wonder if Hatton is paying the bills?.
I hope something good comes out of this.

Re: Will we see Lucas Browne in the ring again?
Assuming Browne cops a 6 month ban, perhaps someone with a belt other than the WBA will offer him a fight when his suspension ends? Fury has repeatedly said he'd like to fight Browne. But that might well have been on the basis he held a belt at the time.
Re: Will we see Lucas Browne in the ring again?
The Oquendo fight was to happen in July which is just over a month away but still no word on Browne, However the WBA tournament is still running.
WBA schedules Ortiz-Ustinov purse bid
The WBA Championships Committee has called for a May 19 purse bid for WBA interim heavyweight champion Luis Ortiz (25-0, 22 KOs) against Alexander Ustinov (33-1, 24 KOs) after the parties failed to reach an agreement during the free negotiations time frame. The bout will be part of the WBA’s ambitious heavyweight tournament announced last January in order to crown a single heavyweight champion.
