The gloves Henry wore when he fought the then Cassius Clay in 1963 were sold at auction this week. They have been verified as far as humanly possible.
Guess how much, without searching the internet.

I'll leave it 10 minutes and come back with the figure.

Obviously in terms of food and roof over the head it’s one hell of a sum but when you consider what diamonds and paintings and all manner of silly old items change hands for, I agree with you. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When you consider that Ali is the most famous sportsman to have ever lived- a true icon, on a rare trip to Britain......
Obviously his OWN gloves will be more valuable and he’s had plenty of more famous fights but still - let’s assume these are THE real gloves Cooper wore on the night, still a lovely piece of memorabilia and British sporting history.

Let’s play Cash In The Attic for a second...... what price would you put on the gloves Ali wore for the Rumble (assuming they are still in his possession, which they probably are)? I say a half to three-quarters of a million.

The Clay gloves for this fight were given/taken by London gangster Albert Dimes after the fight and the following day, tear and all, were displayed in the window of his bookies shop in Soho.
These gloves are now on display at Ali exhibition at the O2 arena. I believe these gloves are now owned by a friend of Steve Bunce as he mentioned this in the last edition of Boxing Monthly.
What's the betting that the Cooper gloves end up on display at the same Exhibition pretty soon.
I see the comments about their value , but I understand neither of Henry's Lonsdale belts went for more that £40,000 each shortly after he died. I might be wrong on this.

I think £85,000 for gloves an opponent of Ali wore is phenomenal. I nearly went along to this as I was interested in another item (that went for £200) but I couldn't really afford to bid. I'll save my money for when some Ali worn gloves come up for auction.

Then I remember I was dragged to a modern art museum last year and saw a 10 foot painting that looked like it had been done by a 5 year old from the special class... it was just a series of random colours thrown willy-nilly onto a canvas and was valued at over 200 grand. It was pure shite.

Makes a bit of actual boxing history look like a bargain by comparison.

I'm not a fan of that sort of stuff either, but I think there is a lot more going on normally, they do have meaning which can be understood and often take a lot of time to produce for the exact effect given.
