Degale - how did you see it? (SPOILER)

Post by MarkMcBurney »

Watt/Halling predictably had James a wide victor, I scored it 114-114, thought James threw a lot more but hit gloves a lot.

Wouldn't argue 115-113, some close rounds, but 117-111 is BS IMO.

You?

115-113 Degale. Poor performance on his end....Medina should be easy work for a top guy and Jack already cruised to a stoppage over him.

I also wasn't impressed with Chunky's previous showing----people talk of Bute suddenly being refreshed but maybe James just wasn't that good?

Melina by 2 rounds. Threw 3 times as much and landed twice as much. His body shots landed everytime.

Degale won but didn't look great, and the post fight comments seemed to suggest he thinks Medina was on something....

Degale was awful tonight, no jab and fought most of the fight on the ropes.

There have to be some serious concerns about how Degale is finishing fights. He really should have been able to get Molina out of there, but he started coasting again. He showed some lovely stuff at times, but it needs to be more than just bursts and posturing. Overall, not a great performance.

Medina threw twice as many punches. Punch stats were

DeGale landed 315
Medina landed 245

No way DeGale landed more. That's utter BS. Then again it was the promotions fighter so what do you expect?

apparently so. Medina was missing a lot, and landing on gloves and arms a lot

Degale by 2 rounds.

Piss poor performance. Really, he was so lazy and looked like he couldn't be bothered. Degale seems like a fighter who will perform quite well against the top opponents like he did vs Dirrell but is going to go into cruise mode for the lower level opponents which will end up upsetting him.

Medina came very close to the upset tonight because Degale didn't bother putting the effort in and thought he could just coast by with minimal effort.

After the Dirrel win, I really rated him but now I'm not too sure. If you can't win comfortably against Medina then that asks some serious questions.

Be interested to to know why he might think that, if your perception is correct. There’s no reason whatsoever why a pro athlete souldn’t be able to go at it for half an hour.
Was watching Maidana Broner last night as I’d not watched it in full. Out the traps like a greyhound! Funny as heck

Overall, not a great performance.

Could you say he’s like an anti-Golovkin in his finishing style do you think?

As regards the performance, he seems to be like that does Degale. He sizzles or fizzles out. That one in London last year against that Virgil Hunter trained American being an example....or the Dirrell fight. Still, he’s got the “W” - yet again.
If he fights this Badou Jack I expect him to go up a level.

Jack obviously. They both want it. And Jack looked even worse.

I'm not sure it's fair to compare anyone to Golovkin, in terms of finishing opponents. Here's Golovkin against Bute in the amateurs, just because why not?

Degale just seems to be falling into a pattern of winning rounds, scoring with a few shots, and not closing the show.

Jim McDonnell over trains his fighters and they leave it in the gym IMO. He'd be so much better off with Adam booth or Jimmy tibbs.

DeGale constantly gets dictated. He is a fine boxer when he is forcing the action. Frustrating guy to watch because he is better than what he showed last night. He has to use the jab more and work off it. Doesn't seem the brightest outside the ring and he's the same in it. Just an observation because I am a fan of the guy.

Medina for me.

Degale was taking too much time off in the rounds and it's not like he wasn't getting hit when he was against the ropes. Medina landed more than Degale too. Those stats were complete BS. Degale wasn't countering as he usually does and wasn't willing to stand and fight Medina on the inside. You can't reward negativity and arm punch pot shots over hard punches Medina was landing.I had Medina by one.

117-112 DeGale i agree he wasnt excellent i expected him to totally outclass Medina and it was his class that seen him through but he was tagged time and again and kept having his familiar lazy spells,i just thought James's quality gave him the edge in some rounds, some he stole in the last 30 seconds,i wont argue with them being a little closer though,i thought Medina was game as hell

Comfortable win scorewise but not the performance i expected from DeGale although his right hooks come uppercuts were out the top drawer

I scored the Jack/Bute fight even as well,Badou was landing the more solid shots but was lazy from the start and his workrate grinded to a near halt allowing Lucian to pick up the points with busy swarming punches

I thought the whole card was dire if im honest

Back to the shopping centre on C5 performance, might as well stay in the USA now as I doubt he would ever sell 80k tickets like Froch did at Wembley

I respect Jim McDonnell, he an excellent trainer, but he can be found wanting when it comes to in fight corner work.

Imagine Angelo Dundee in that corner and there is no way Degale is allowed to expend so much energy early on.

Fair play to Chunky, I thought it was clear that he won the fight. Really happy for him. He beats Jack easily, then who knows?

Yeah I thought he won clearly and agree he'll beat Jack. He makes things harder for himself than it has to be though. I thought he would've sorted that out as he grew in experience but he hasn't.
