Do heavyweights get stopped on bodyshots ?
Do heavyweights get stopped on bodyshots ?
Can't remember the last time I saw a heavyweight actually get stopped with a bodyshot .
Last nights fights on Sky showed Chisora throwing bodyshots in the clinches and Pulev laughing and sticking his tongue out
On the other side of the coin you had Crolla stopping his opponent with a nice bodyshot ( as usually is the way with the lighter weights and is a much used punch in their armoury )
I wondered why this is that you don't see many heavies stopped with a cracking bodypunch ?

Re: Do heavyweights get stopped on bodyshots ?
Think it's more a case of heavyweights just throwing less body shots than fighters at lighter weights. Very few of them are comfortable fighting up close to their opponent these days. I'm sure the likes of Tyson folded a few with hooks to the body.
Not having to make weight probably plays a part as well, their bodies are more natural if that makes sense, compared to Barroso who looked very dry at the weigh in on Friday. When you're losing a lot of weight before a fight, a lot of it will come off the stomach and rib sort of areas, I imagine that makes you quite susceptible to being hurt with hard body shots. Heavyweights don't really have that problem to the same extent.

Fury stopped Rogan with a body shot.
Re: Do heavyweights get stopped on bodyshots ?
Ah , the not making weight bit makes perfect sense , hadn't thought of that one
Can't remember there being a heavyweight really noted for being a McCallum style " bodysnatcher" in modern times and that could be the reason why ,

Think I remember Konstantin Airich getting stopped with a body shot in a fight. Audley Harrison stopped a few guys with body shots. Obviously this is all at a pretty low level.
I did comment last night that I thought the Body shots Del was throwing constantly in the clinches must have been hurting like fornicate after a while.

Going back quite a few years Bob Fitzsimmons stopped James Corbett with his famous solar plexus punch.
Although this was for the heavyweight championship Fitzsimmons weighed 167Lbs and Corbett 184Lbs.
I seem to remember Julius Francis getting stopped by body shots against John Ruiz and Željko Mavrović.

I thought it was a good post and question until you break it down...
There are 17 recognised weight divisions (at least.)
So, in an equal sense, you could ask "why are there no more stoppages by body shots in the super fly division? Which won't be considered of course

Re: Do heavyweights get stopped on bodyshots ?
Francesca Pianeta got KOed in the first round by a bodyshot, Chagaev did it more often if I remember it correct. I also heard Tyson Fury gives a lot more bodyshots as avarage, probably because his opponends have an open body trying to reach his head, so he probably has some bodyshot KOs as well.
Re: Do heavyweights get stopped on bodyshots ?
Toney stopped Holyfield with bodyshots effectively. I know Don Turner called it off but it was bodyshots that had dropped and hurt Evander
Re: Do heavyweights get stopped on bodyshots ?
Senior vs Sprott, Bruno vs Frazier, Fields vs Airch, Tyson dropped Frazier with one, and Tubbs I think, Fury vs Belshaw.
Tua, Cooney, Sanders, Joe Frazier were all good body punchers

Re: Do heavyweights get stopped on bodyshots ?
Been answered before but basically heavies are taller so less adept, willing to fight at close range. They have higher levels of body fat so more protection. They throw less punches and body shots are usually the last punch in a combination so they are less likely to throw them.
Re: Do heavyweights get stopped on bodyshots ?
Tyson V Tubbs was a great shot, Tubbs was doing ok until then if memory serves! If going to try and find it now.fizzjambo wrote:Senior vs Sprott, Bruno vs Frazier, Fields vs Airch, Tyson dropped Frazier with one, and Tubbs I think, Fury vs Belshaw.

Re: Do heavyweights get stopped on bodyshots ?
Matt Skelton struggled with body shots at the tailed of his career - I think Pulev felled him that way.
Skelton also used to the body shot to good effect himself, mind you. I remember him shattering the ribcage of Mark Krence. Krence quit on his stool, causing widespread boos from the crowd. Skelton took the microphone and told them to have some respect, instructing them to turn their boos into applause.
Krence had taken the fight a short notice after a late pullout from Danny Williams. Always respected Skelton after that.

Fury's one of the few tall heavies willing and prepared to fight on the inside. Audley used to have some classy inside skills on the seldom occasions he used them.asdfjkl wrote:Francesca Pianeta got KOed in the first round by a bodyshot, Chagaev did it more often if I remember it correct. Chuvalo was a fighter who threw a lot of body shots, I think with heavyweights, it is usually that they fight at a slower pace, less punches thrown therefore, slowing down the engine might not be seen as a priority unlike it might be in the lighter weights.
Cooney was a vicious bodypuncher. If you can bend them in like he could when he was a pro, that is something in your arsenal.
Joe Frazier as well, oooff...![[icon_notworthy.gif]](./images/smilies/icon_notworthy.gif)

Heavies don't throw them enough. I remember T. Fury stopping a tall low level fighter with one.
Re: Do heavyweights get stopped on bodyshots ?
that's my point , I reckon it's a punch that's not used enough , just wondered why it seemed like more of the old school used to use it more ?BitPlayer wrote:Heavies don't throw them enough. I remember T. Fury stopping a tall low level fighter with one.

Albeit against nobodies, but Briggs has stopped a few of his recent fights on bodyshots.

I remember that night well - didn't the tv cameras follow a mean and moody looking Krence into the dressing room before the fight, only for the door to close behind him to clearly display the 'Female Changing Room' signDixonian wrote:Skelton also used to the body shot to good effect himself, mind you.
