History's biggest coward
History's biggest coward
Canelo has pulled the ultimate duck today, reminiscent of Bowe in 1992.
Is there a bigger duck in the history of the sport or is it now a straight shoot out between these 2 lily-livered shitebags?

Re: History's biggest coward
No-one who gets into a boxing ring is a coward.
I didn't like what Bowe did in '92; it stank, but the man had the heart of a lion.
I don't like what Alvarez is doing now either, but he's also not a coward.
I think both men were/are badly advised & that is the crux of the matter.
Bowe should have put his foot down & Alvarez should do the same now, but they put too much faith in the people that are around them & sometimes those people can make you look like a mug & this is what has happened.

Re: History's biggest coward
All ridiculous claims. Bowe made 10 million for two easy fights and a bigger payday than Lennox against Evander.
Canelo looks stupid after calling Golovkin out in the ring but he's not a coward.
Floyd fought the best in the game over 5 weight classes for well over a decade.
Ask guys like Burley, Williams, Charles, Moore, etc.. about being ducked.

I must agree and yes Canelo should put his foot down whats Oscar worried about he fought the best that was around and reaped the rewards purse wise when he was fighting but keeps ruining this MEGA fight is he worried he will get pushed further down the Mexican all time great list because he don't need the money Canelo might he's only 25 and nearing 50 fight's get the biggest money fights now because you don't know whats up around the bend and besides this fight will really show the World that you are boxing biggest current star.

No one who climbs through the ropes is a coward. No one.
But if you want to talk about a guy who OPENLY ADMITTED he was afraid to accept the challenge of a stronger, tougher fighter because he knew he would be beaten to a pulp it has to be Henry Cooper, who for a decade ducked George Chuvalo.

I don't buy into the "no one who steps into the ring is a coward" idea. I've seen a few cowards step into the ring. They're the ones that talk shit and then when shit starts getting real, fake an injury, or avoid coming to the gym at the same time a tough sparring partner works out. In the pros, they're the ones ducking fighters, claiming fouls, or takin a knee/dive.
Coward can be an apt word.

I talked to Bowe recently and he said Rock Neuman told him they were bigger than the WBC and that's why the belt went in the bin.
Were there circumstances for Bowe not fighting Lewis? Yes, Did he duck Lewis? Yes.

Not much pisses me off about boxing politics or history, but that does, a world class fighter who wanted to be a Commonwealth champion.writehooks wrote:No one who climbs through the ropes is a coward. No one.

The Empire committee should have stripped Cooper - simple as that, and match Chuvalo with Brian London(or Bob Cleroux) for the vacant title. Problem solved.
London would have fought Chuvalo, that guy fought everyone whereas Cooper had no problem openly admitting ducking certain fighters.

I've often thought this. It's like getting in a fornicating ring is the scariest thing that ever happened.Joe Boxer wrote:I don't buy into the "no one who steps into the ring is a coward" idea. I watched my wife give birth to my son.
I'd boil down to 154lbs and fight Kovalev at LHW 4 times before i'd go through that shit.
And the vast majority of women want to do it. That's bravery!!!

I think what James Butler did to Richard Grant qualifies easily.
Any disagreement on this?

I disagree. I think that an evil man is not necessarily a coward. I don't see anything inherently cowardly in what he did.BoxBuzz wrote:I think what James Butler did to Richard Grant qualifies easily.

I don't say this in any way as an objection to Butler being called a coward, which in the grand scheme of things, he probably is.
But it's probably better to be on your guard around such villains and to anticipate their potential to cause you harm through acts that, in themselves, wouldn't be considered cowardly.

Evil and Cowardly are bedfellows and in this case, both terms apply. To hit a man when he is not looking especially in those specific circumstances. is about as iconic a display of cowardliness that there is.
What's the difference between that and shooting someone in the back? Or is that not cowardly? Was the fact that he did it in front of witnesses, and thus would have eventual consequences the "waiver" in this case? I doubt he thought it through, though an even more despicable cowardly act would have been to catch him alone after the fight, and shoot him dead with no witnesses.
But to me it's just a matter of degrees. Unless you think doing it in public took courage? He took a violent action, knowing full well the victim would have no recourse against him. And he was just as angry at this guy winning as he would have been had his girlfriend humiliated him, and he beat the pulp out of her for doing so.

I may be guilty of having spoken in ignorance here. I seem to recall Butler throwing that punch after some kind of verbal confrontation but it's a long time since I saw that.
If he did actually throw that punch while Grant was looking away, I'm totally wrong in saying the act was not cowardly.

He hit him from the side, blindsided him. It was very sneaky.

Couldn't agree more. He has complete control over who he fights in favor of less risky fights and more money. He was a great boxer in his early days, but the guy is just a businessman now. A true boxer is someone who takes on a real challenge. Imagine for a second if there were two Floyds, do you think that they'd pick each other to fight? Unlikely, and even if for some miracle they do get to fight each other, do you think it would be a knockout fight?Tuan_Jim wrote:Floyd Mayweather.

Yeah,I remember watching that on live ESPN Boxing on television.
I cant tell you how shocking that was to see a live brutal crime in progress.
totally unexpected and out of the blue.
and it was on a benefit for the firefighters who had lost their lives in the Twin Towers.

Re: History's biggest coward
London was all set to face Chuvalo in Toronto in the fall of 1965, but then hightailed it back to Britain after witnessing one of George's sparring sessions at the Landsdowne Gym. His excuse for pulling out of the fight was that he was suffering from sleep deprivation because his hotel was too close to the airport. It's too bad it never came off, because it would have added to Chuvalo's all-time record of beating up guys named after cities: Charlie Boston; Boston Jacobs; Cleveland Williams; Lloyd Washington; Charlie Reno; Tony Ventura.
