Sad to report that famed Southern California cutman Joe Chavez passed away over the weekend.

Chavez was the cutman for Oscar de la Hoya, Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, James Toney and Vernon Forrest among others. A 50-year veteran in the fight game, Chavez was also one of the sport’s top hand-wrappers.

“Joe Chavez was an incredible cutman and a great person,” said boxing manager Frank Espinoza. “He’ll be sorely missed by the sport of boxing and by those who knew him and enjoyed his company. He was a master at his craft and I can genuinely say that there was no better cutman than Joe Chavez. My deepest condolences to his family.”

One of the highlights of Joe’s career came on June 13, 2009, when he managed to keep a terrible cut over Miguel Cotto’s left eye in check for ten rounds, allowing Cotto to stay in the fight and win a twelve round split decision over Joshua Clottey at Madison Square Garden.
