Fonfara/Smith Jr and Payano/Warren 2

Post by handsofstone »

Been confirmed for this Saturday on allegedly, good news as theres nowt else on this weekend boxing wise

Fonfara having his 1st fight since beating Cleverly against Joe Smith Jr who ive never heard of,21-1 record with 17KO's hasnt fought anyone of note, his sole loss was by KO,Andrzej should deal with him pretty comfortably i wouldve thought??

On the undercard Juan Carlos Payano defends his WBA bantamweight title in a rematch against Rau'shee Warren,Payano won 1st fight by SD although i personally thought Warren deserved it,though it was close and messy with point dedctions and all sorts and a pretty poor ref from memory ,it was a good fight though despite the messy nature of it

It's a real shame for me that Forfara and Beterbiev haven't been matched together.

That would be a fun fight,Fonfara is one of those fightters that proves just because you've been KO'd early in your career from an unestablished fighter, you can still have a great chin and punch resistence

Like you I've never heard of Joe Smith Jr. I don't really rate Fonfara that highly (think he's tough but very limited) but he should win this easily.

Yeah and I think it would be a great testing fight for Beterbiev aswell to see where he's at.

He is fairly limited but very effective

Against a certain level of opposition, yeah. But I don't think he'd comfortably beat any top 10 light heavyweights.

He gave Stevenson a pretty damn tough fight and the former is definitely a top ten light heavy.

He did, but I think Fonfara is one of those Martin Murray types who will be competitive with anyone (except Kovalev) but won't have enough to beat the best.

The fight that interests me most on this card is between unbeaten MW prospects Huge Centeno and Maciej Sulecki, but for some reason it's not being televised.

As for Fonfara, he is quite limited in terms of skill and defense, and I remember Gabriel Campillo busting him up for about 8 rounds shortly before the Stevenson fight, which made a lot of people think he'd be an easy scalp for Adonis. Even EBU level gatekeeper Doudou Ngumbu was hitting with fairly regulalry with flush shots, and at times it looked like Fonfara wasn't even trying to avoid them.

On the other hand, he's shown time and time again that he's got a top shelf engine, with him surging and finishing the stronger man against Johnson, Campillo,Stevenson, Ngumbu, and Cleverly (who has good stamina himself). He's also fairly durable (he has to be with his lack of defense) and a pretty solid cumulative puncher, so it would be interesting to see how Beterbiev would react if they're 6 rounds into a fight and Fonfara has taken his shots and is still chugging forward.

Also, x3 on having no idea who the fuckk Joe Smith Jr. is.

Really thought Fonfara would of got a big fight on the back of the Clev win.

Braehmer is a fight he should actively chase. He's there for the taking. Hope Clev gets that fight.

Joe Smith is a trash fight he has been in with no one. Intersted in the Payano Warren fight hope there is a clear winner and get McDonnell in there later in the year.

Agree it's a bollocks belt but there is unfinished business between those two.

I've always thought Clev has the punch output to beat Braehmer.
With all the late pullouts I think Braehmer knows it too.
Be interesting to see what happens with German boxing.
Abraham, Klitschkos, Sturm, Braehmer and Stieglitz have sold out shows and TV for a decade. All careers coming to a end with no clear successors.

Who have people got in the Payano v Warren fight? Pretty sure it goes the distance, but no idea on a winner.
