Thurman's Team Knew the Result Before it Was Read?

Post by chucktaylor »

Thurman's team seemed to be celebrating the win a bit before the decision was read, and his trainer was holding the belt as they were reading the decision. WTF is with him having the belt already? It should be held be a WBA official until the winner is declared. Idk if it was against the rules somehow, but it totally ruined the suspense.

Fighters always celebrate like they won before a decision in a close fight. Not sure how they got the belt though.

I've seen this type of thing happen before, and I remember Rafael tweeting that Salido would win a SD over Loma before the official result was announced. A lot of the time if you keep an eye on the sanctioning body representative you'll notice them walk behind a specific fighter, obviously knowing that they've won.

Sturm definitely knew a result of his last fight after he survived 12 rounds.

I suspect that Canelo knew results of his fights against Trout and Lara before they were announced.

Most people think Thurman won 7-5 or 8-4,
why is it weird that Thurman and his team thought the same thing?

Didn't Khan and Roach both admit that they'd be informed that they'd won the Peterson fight before the delay etc?

Not unusual to see people affiliated with the fighters get close to the officials and try and overhear the decisions before its announced.

I thought Thurman already had the belt. Wasn't he already the regular champ?

An official is supposed to hold onto the belt from the fight starting until the decision is announced. That's the only reasonable way to do it. Otherwise, they would have to confiscate belts in the ring when they change hands- that doesn't happen. There is no "losing former-champ getting stripped of his belt in the ring ceremony."
So, we see Thurman's trainer is jumping in the corner with the belt held high before the announcement and it makes it really fvcking obvious who won.

I always thought the past champion keeps his belt and the new champion receives a new one from the organization.

YES!!! Thurman was ALREADY the World Champion... He was DEFENDING the belt... The defending World Champion already HAS the belt... Even if he loses the belt by losing the fight he doesn't have to give back HIS title belt... He can put it in a place of honor in his trophy room... but he can't display it when he fight anymore... And when he wins the Title BACK...he get ANOTHER belt, so now he's got 2.
