Bankers for the Olympics?

Post by TheGoods »

Four years ago I got Claressa Shields at a mind blowing 25/1 to win Olympic gold. Who are the bankers for gold this year and why?

Robeisis Ramirez and Claressa Shields were both freely available at 33/1 as advised on my Olympics preview and review done for the now defunct UTNR.Shields is 1/5 for Rio and Adams and Taylor are also odds on for Gold.

What follows is a purely political analysis.

How about Robson Conceicao? He appears to be Brazil's best hope for gold. In 2012 UK had two gold medalists, in 2008 China had 2 golds. In 2013 the world championships were in Kazakstan and their fighters got 4 gold.

Also from Brazil, Joedison Texeira seems decent. Lets be honest, how corrupt is it going to be? Can Texeira keep it close against anyone in the division. I think he might be able to.

From Brazil, I don't see anyone else, but it's hard to know. The fighter at least has to be able to keep it somewhat close over 3 rounds. It can't be another Roy Jones situation.

After Brazil, how about AzerBaijan? I mean, seriously. AIBA loves AzerBaijan.

Lets go with Elvin Mamishzada, Javid Chalabiyev, Lorenzo Sotomayor, Parviz Baghirov, and Magomedrasul Majidov. Put a few on all those guys.

I left out Albert Selimov because he is already a favorite and he is in Robson Conceicao weight class. So not really good value there.

Cubans are the best, but this is factored in to the odds, so not good value. Moreover, Erislandy Savon will be robbed as sure as the sun rises in the morning.

How about someone from Venezuela? They paid AIBA a lot of money to host the qualifier. Luis Carera or Luis Arcon could fit the bill. Maybe not gold, but perhaps to medal.

Shakur Stevenson is not good value. High likelihood of getting robbed in late rounds and less experienced than others at weight class. But he will likely get through early rounds, depending on his draw. So if he is in there with a scrub, bet on him because he will outclass them and make it hard for judges to rob him.

Antonio Vargas also will outclass anyone who is not elite. So put money on him in early rounds.

Finally, put some money on some Uzbeks.

It's a fact that the host country always gets favoritism. Sometimes the officials just might feel they should give it to the host country since they are being taken care of nicely and sometimes like the Chinese light heavy in the Beijing Olympics, the fix was in. He got 3 gifts on the way to gold.

Are there any sites where you can bet on a certain match? I only see you can bet on the gold medalists. In London you could also bet on specific fights and I made some money back then.

Sometimes you have to ask them for odds
I am not sure whether non-residents can bet with them

Thanks, I found it on bet365. Won some money today :-). But lost two bouts (Cappai and Huseynov) that I thought were safe beforehand.

The bookies like AIBA know absolutely nothing about Amateur Boxing--there are some astonishing odds being offered.

any you find particularly astonishing? Antonio Vargas went from 33/1 to 7/2 in the last two days, which I find somewhat astonishing. Both are offbase (33/1 might be closer to truth).

Nistor was killed by The Magnificent Seven. What a shame... Seems they are starting to work.
Won all the three rounds, two knockdowns, in my opinion second and third round must be 10:8 for him.... And not to forget 5-star Poggi.... He did everything to help the Jordan boxer to survive. Pretty high odds for the winner of the fight...

Nistor was well and truly robbed-I thought Rosniel Iglesias was also stitched up.These decisions are as bad as drug violations for our sport.Disgraceful.

Alvarez gone. Poor fight really and paid the price for too much posturing against a game Brazilian.

The Cubans cant buy a win here. Brawling and Holding seem to be more popular than clean concise quality punching.
If I was a cynic I might say that Cuba were too dominant in the WSB and are paying the price here.
