Carl Frampton is the frontrunner for Fighter of the Year

Post by gilgamesh »

With a tremendous win over #2 ranked Scott Quigg earlier in the year, and then moving up to get the upset victory over Leo Santa Cruz in a 2nd weight class. No doubt about it Frampton's having a better year than anyone up to this point. You guys think he fights a 3rd time before the year is out?

I just asked the same on another forum. He seems like the frontrunner off the top of my head.

Definitely.

Beating 2 unbeaten World Champions. Yeah, he'd be my favourite.

Maybe Terrence Crawford could give him a run for it if he has another good win before the year is out.

Frampton could possibly squeeze a title defense in there too. I don't think it'd be unreasonable for him to have a big coming home party and fight a beatable opponent in Belfast. Though it'd be even more awesome if he took on another dangerous opponent.

He's definitely up there at the moment but there's still a little while to go yet. He's certainly British/Irish fighter of the year so far. I'm hoping to see him out again in November/December. If he were to beat another top guy then he'd have a strong case for being named fighter of the year.

Yes he was (unfortunately). He did hold the WBA Super Bantamweight title which Frampton took off him.

I think if frampton fights another dangerous contender then he wins it easily.

The only way it goes to someone else now is if Frampton doesn't fight for the remainder of the year and Crawford defeats a really big name impressively.

The next fight for both Crawford and Frampton will decide it but Frampton so far is definitely in consideration. If somehow Crawford gets a shot at Pacquiao and wins, Crawford will win it.

Pacquiao is 4-3 (0) since 2012. Is he really a huge scalp, name and reputation aside?

I kinda agree but in other ways don't. Pacquiao is nowhere near as good as he was when destroyed Hatton in 2. He's past his best but, I'd still say he's the best WW in the world. One of his losses was a robbery against Bradley, the other against Mayweather so I can't hold them against him too much. He's definitely the biggest scalp in the WW division.

I'd say he's still significantly better than LSC and Quigg.

The best thing about Frampton, for me, is that he is not signed to Eddie and is still earning massively and getting huge fights. Fingers up to the flash Essex prick.

We are talking FOTY, two massive wins, two different weight divisions, PPV in the UK for one fight, well paid stateside for another and more importantly massive stature and respect. Yes the PPV was via Matchroom but they are not signed to them and left them years ago.

Hope other fighters will see they do not HAVE to be with Hearn. If you are good, you are good and the rewards will come.

definitely the front runner. if he has another fight before the year is out and wins he has to get it for me. only others could be Crawford is gets another big win or if Kovalev beats Ward well.

If Carl fights and beats Selby in the winter around November/December then he will easily collect the award.

I don't think Carl wants a easy win next, I think he wants to have the fights that will test him and Selby would be a different type of fight.

You would have to say yes because Manny is already a boxing hall of fame fighter, who is still a World beater. If it came down to it, it would be probably would be a deciding factor between Crawford and Frampton for fighter of the year.

I mean Crolla only has one win this year so far. It'll be major for him if he beats Jorge Linares, but I don't think anybody would necessarily consider it much of an upset if he were to beat Linares. Linares is a good talent, but he's beatable.

Frampton beating Santa Cruz was an upset, and then beating Quigg was huge also because they were #1 and #2 at 122 pounds respectively.

I don't know that even a win for Crolla over Linares puts him ahead of Frampton this year, but it would definitely be a huge year for U.K. Boxing if it's a fight at the top between Crolla and Frampton.

It's still not out of the question for Frampton to squeeze a 3rd fight this year into the mix either. I doubt it happens considering how long it takes guys to put fights together these days, but if he just put together a small fight to get a win in front of a raucous crowd in Ireland it would be a reminder to people what a great year he's had, and give him a chance to give another solid performance before the year is out.
