Danny on his own...

Post by bennie »

Looks like Danny Williams will have virtually zero support in Lousiville this Friday. Benz Travel, who advertised a trip to the fight on the back of BN, have cancelled it due to poor numbers - and the air fare to Louisville is close to a grand this time of the year (a busy time for flights).
British supporters just won't be making the trip.

Says all you need to know about his popularity in this country doesn't it? Its not like he's even an unheard of, a lot of his recent fights have been on the BBC.

Danny just doesn't have that 'Bruno' factor.

I shall be cheering him on from my armchair though. :TU:

No Bruno factor? Think that means he's not gonna get whipped by Tyson?

It also proves a point of mine slightly wrong. I always thought if a boxer of the fame of Tyson could sell out to big crowds if they fought me.

Part of the problem is Louisville is a bitch to get to. No direct flights.

Has anyone here travelled with Benz Travel? I have booked to go to Las Vegas with them for DLH-Hopkins, they are always quick enough on the phone when there is something to be paid for but in regards to receipts/info/sending stuff out it is hard to correspond with them. I know they are Boxing regulars and also do the football....any feedback? :o

Yes, they run quite an old fleet of Russian 1950's planes, sometimes needs a push from the passengers on the run way before take off, but usualy fine if they manage to get airborn. :D

I'm hoping to go to that one, Steve, so may be making the trip with you. A guy called Mike deals with the boxing for Benz Travel and he floats in and out of the office. He's hard to pin down.
His mobile is 07708 344206.

Doesn't Mike Tyson have limited options as to where he fights now? Didn't he have to fight Lewis in Memphis as Tennessee was one of the few states that would hold his fight, which is why he returned to it when he fought Etienne. Wasn't there some big stink because he was a former rapist? When he came over to Britain they made a big fuss about it, and Tyson fought a couple of times in Europe as he was having trouble fighting in a lot of US states?

In a word yes, The UK had problems getting him to arrive because he is a criminal although I don't think the BBBoC didn't have a problem per se with granting him a licence. Some states have refused to grant him a licence and I must applaud them for that, these states are losing a lot of money by not getting the biggest draw in town.

Mike really doesn't sound like he's training for this fight. He admitted in an interview with Steve Kim that he wasn't going to bother training that day ( bad back ) until he saw all the press there, and changed him mind.

Roach is as good as it gets, but he seems to amount to little more than another Yes Man when it comes to Mike Tyson ( mind you, on those wages I'd be saying yes most of the time too ).

"Ready to train today Mike? No? Fancy a lie in instead? Ok, see you tomorrow then."

I'm starting to believe Danny Williams might be in with a huge chance on Friday night.

If Danny won, would it make the front pages over here?

Mike is training, but it sounds like his progress is stedy at best. It's always seductive to imagine him snapping back 15 years, but it ain't gonna happen.

However, Williams is several classes below him....

As I work at Heathrow, I can tell you that all the flights to the USA are astronomically expensive in July, as the US market is flooded with family holidays. I can't even get a staff ticket, as they are embargoed until August/September. You'd be looking at £600 at least just to get to NY/Chicago/LA etc.

If you can get a ticket to the USA, go to ebookers for your connecting flight. At the bottom of the page where the country flags are, click onto the one with a globe. That's where you can get flights internally around the world. Then choose your dates as normal. The quickest (and cheapest) way to Louisville is via Chicago.

Am I the only one who thinks it will go a few rounds? As you know, I'm a natural at predicting fights. I'm so good, it's scary. Told you Leonard Dorin would be the new WBC light-welterweight champion.

I am in the US every three to four weeks and NEVER seem to be able to tie up my schedule so it ties in with the boxing :(

It is horribly expensive this time of year even taking into account I hate getting onto a plane and turning right 8)

I wouldn't splash out the £15 on this one for PPV ( despite the initial thrill of seeing skelton beat up on old King Cole - how sad that ain't going to happen ) I am certainly not going to fork out best part of £1500 to see it live

I reckon, with flights, hotel, food and decent tickets you need to allow £1500 minimum to do these things properly

I said somewhere else, perhaps to be controversial, perhaps to be bullish etc.

But Williams SHOULD win this fight. Not could. SHOULD.

He has all the tools to beat the remains of the Tyson myth. Sure Tyson can punch but only one at a time, he doesn't move well, he doesn't throw combinations, he has questionable stamina, self-belief and will.

He has faded hand-speed and he has no plan B.

All Williams has to do is get to the 3-4th round and to me he's favourite.

The horror on Roach and Tyson's face if Williams make it to the end of the third will be palpable.

For all the PR, Tyson has trained when he feels like it by Roach's own admission, is 38, has fought 49 seconds in over two years and is frankly SCH-ER-OT to pieces.

He's motivated only by money, has had back problems during the fight and focus problems as far as two weeks away from fight night.

IF WILLIAMS doesn't realise he has a chance to propel himself into the top ten with this fight and possibly a WBA shot he wants shooting.

Williams has every tool he needs to win, I just hope he realises it.

Williams is as shot as Tyson.

Watch him crumple within two rounds.

Williams has not impressed in his last six. Tyson, shot or not, will anhialate him.

Pre June and Post September air fares go down dramatically. I think I paid 300 quid to get to LA , and that was an open ticket on which I could return any time within the next year.

This time of year it's just stupid. I may try and get out for the Hopkins v DLh annihilation.

Danny hasn't impressed since July 2001 - three long years ago, when he avenged his loss to Julius Francis with a four-round knockout. His workrate is appallingly low and he has a tendency to compensate by straying below the belt (Mirovic, Sprott). Freddie Roach is warning Danny to avoid the low blows.
Worst case scenario: Tyson loses it after Danny hits him low. It could happen.

Like I have said elsewhere, even rusty shot Tyson is better than the turk who absolutely brutalised Williams.

any fit active heavy had a chance against Tyson, even in his heyday ( Tucker, Smith etc )

That is even more the case and the reson why his people will select his opponents very carefully now.

I think of it like going to see a "greatest hits" performance by some aging old rocker. The songs sound the same, they just move so much slower

Williams has the tools to win big fights and any heavy with any ambition should be lining up to beat up on a big name. The two things that make me think it aint coing to happen

1) Williams doesn't think he can win

2) If Tyson lands a good shot early, I am sure the fight will be stopped even if prematurely. There is enough moeny still in Tyson for those around him to be sure that the wheels are not allowed to come off the gravy train because of a no name from across the pond
