why are the women boxers wearing head gear?

Post by aliboy123 »

I don't understand why the men in the ams are not wearing head gear but the women are! whichever way you look at it its a very sexist move on the organisers part. perhaps they imagine the blokes have already lost their marbles but in my view head gear is more dangerous than being bare headed

what say?

I'm not sure why they are wearing them now but they come off of the women and U-19's in 2017. They should be off just like the men now and they should fight 3 x 3's instead 4 x 2's.

They should make them fight with their udders out. Would make it a little more appealing.

Why do you think headgear is more dangerous than without?

Isn't it obvious, it's to protect their earrings, same as the gloves are there to protect their nail varnish.

In seriousness I think it's farcical that women have to wear them if men don't, absolutely no physiological reason I can think of why women would require more protection to their face than men, as the only thing headguards protect against is cuts.

Headguards have been shown to spread the impact around the head more, which causes more shaking of the brain against the skull, which increases the risk of damage to the tissues and blood vessels of the brain, at least in some studies. There's a paper out there someone in the public domain about it.

I would expect the impact to be spread over a larger area but be less in penetration with the headgaurd absorbing some of the energy. Ill look around for some data on this although i would expect it to be safer wearing headgaurds but i have nothing of scientific value to back up my opinion. The main reason im asking is i have a young female family member whos showing an interest but the new scoring system and styles has put me of now. Ill have to look into what your saying cheers

Without the headguard, more of the force is absorbed locally by the tissues of the muscle, skin and bone, I'm not a scientist, but it seems intuitive, as you say, you may lose some force as it absorbed by the headguard, but if that force remaining is then transferred across the skull causing the brain to move, then that's definitely not a good thing.

I think also that headguards can restrict peripheral vision, which makes it more likely you get tagged with a shot you don't see. They were, as far as I am aware, introduced to prevent cuts, and make the sport a bit more palatable.

There is an argument against headguards.

Wearing a headguard effectively makes your head bigger ! - a bigger target is easier to hit.

A headguard can obscure vision and the boxer could have otherwise avoided (or tried to avoid) taking the shot.

They can be cumbersome to wear - again making it more likely to get caught with shots.

The headguards can increase the effect of sweating which could affect performance.

There are very few actual "knockouts" in amateur boxing, however the most interesting / controversial viewpoint is that headguards can stop you getting knocked out ! (yes, I know that this is there purpose).

Getting knocked out is your bodies own natural physiological response to protect itself - you don't think about getting knocked out, your body just does it for you whether you like it or not in order to protect you. If you take a shot(s) that would otherwise have knocked you out, then you could take even more punishment - I hope this makes sense ?? .....

Why do you think headgear is more dangerous than without?[/quote]

I can hit you twenty good shots to the head and with the gear on you wont go down just soak up the jolts to your brain.

with no gear you go down from far fewer punches or the ref stops you

a theory - but not original

The reason that head guards are being dropped is nothing to do with safety in my opinion.
AIBA want to make amateur boxing a more saleable product.
Boxing is more visually appealing to the general public without them.

Yes you are correct. Everything else they say about safety is BS. Now that have done away with the computer scoring where it was necessary to wear red or blue uniforms...now it is not. They should let boxers wear the colors of their country and just wear the red and blue gloves.

The safety theory of why AIBA dropped the headgear is ridiculous. They just use it to defend themselves against criticism. The KO ratio at the Olympics and other international events had already lowered from over 10% to under 1% due to: 1. better and thicker gloves, 2. qualifying process, 3. 2 minute rounds, 4. RSC-OS rule (a bout was stopped when there were 20 points difference).

Problem was Olympic boxing became too defensive and boring.

So to make it more attractive they got back to 3 minute rounds, got rid of the punch scoring system and removed the headgear for men with plans to remove it for women and youth/juniors.

Problem is there has been an awful lot of cuts. More than 40 already in this Olympics. The urgency to win the bouts makes it so stressful that the intensity is so high that head clashes are impossible to avoid.

AIBA knows it looks ridiculous with women wearing headgear but the men don´t. But there is no urgency to remove the headgear because it will lead to more disaster. So now they say there needs to be more research done. So expect a few years before they will be removed. Then expect some more disaster with loads of cuts.

What a shambles, jesus! It's a complete joke having it for women and not men.

I think in amateur boxing, where you have to fight multiple times in a short period, then headgear to prevent cuts. Not necessarily the current form of headgear, but possibly something a little slimmer that protects brow ridges, and the nose area.

Incidentally, I've caught up on many of the women's bouts, and I have to say that the standard is even lower than I expected (I wasn't expecting much). For the most part it's been very messy and poor from a technical standpoint, there are virtually no signs of power in their punches, and even a standout female fighter like Adams, whom some call one of the best UK amateurs ever, looks unspectacular to me.

Clarissa Shields is the only woman I've been impressed by, and it's easy to see how she's breezed to world and Olympic titles. Taylor was also very good in her day, but that seems to have passed.

Katie Taylor can fair shift? I've actually quite enjoyed watching Nicola Adams in the past. Haven't seen her this tournament though.

Rijker was an absolute animal, she just used to annihilate her opposition. A few of the guys that sparred with her regularly said she hit like a mule and they'd come away in pain after a session. If you look at her build and facial shape, I'd say she probably had a high level of testosterone, maybe she's got a clit like a baby's arm?
