Henry Cooper

Post by dalcumly »

I wonder if anyone can help?
There's a photo of Henry Cooper I'm looking for. I don't have the technical know how to put a copy on here, but if you go to www.paimages.com and type in the search bar - 143186 you can see it. I tried to get a print of it from them but the copyright says 'Editorial' only.
The website is the Press Association, who bought over the original owner of the photo, EMPICS, a number of years ago. Believe it or not, EMPICS used to sell prints of the photo that's why some of you might have it.

By the way , I've written a biography of Cooper's career and it will be out in about 3 weeks time. ( I know, there's been at least 3 other books, but this is not from Henry's own perspective, it's from the 'outside looking in' and hopefully as unbiased as I can make it ! It was a 'labour of love' to be honest)

Hi. Glad to see a new book is coming out. That sounds great. What is it you are actually looking to do with the picture, I didn't understand.

As regards the photo I'm only trying to get a high quality image of the photo so I can get it professionally 'coloured'.
Between the 4th and 5th round , Angelo Dundee applied smelling salts to Clay, which were illegal, enlarged the tear in Clay's glove, and managed to persuade him the round had ended and he wasn't knocked out! It bought his man about 5 seconds!

I remember back in the sixties the boxing rags use to refer to Henry Cooper as being a "test-tube bleeder" - always got a kick out of that nickname; there use to be these photos of him all cut up and still swinging away. The way they stop fights today I guess will never see another like him.

P.S. best of luck with sales!

Henry Cooper lost a chance to fight for the heavyweight championship in 1962 when he lost to Zora Folley.
How do you think Cooper would have done against Floyd Patterson in 1962 as opposed to fighting him in 1966 (with no title on the line)?
I wonder if Cooper fought more aggressivley after the Folley loss ?
(Gerry Cooney always sort of reminded me of Henry Cooper in the manner how he fought, sort of a desperation to get the job done)

what was Henry Cooper's training regime then ?
Did it change over the course of his career ?
I had read where he never lift weights.
Did he chop wood then ?
How many push-ups did he do at a clip or over the day?
did he vary his method of push-ups ?
How many miles a day did he run or walk ?
Did he rest on Sundays ?

Remember when Boxing and Wrestling use to come in the same magazine? - at the time I was a kid so I was duped into thinking it was legit - but now I realize what a really strange mixture that was - of course the difference being that Henry Cooper's blood was real, the wrestling blood was the good old 'cow-patch' blood. (I think that's the term they use to use)

When Folley fought Cooper for the second time -he'd obviously done his homework. Henry liked to come forward throwing a strong straight jab. As soon as the fight started Folley stood his ground and whenever Cooper jabbed, Folley swung over huge right handers many of which landed high on Cooper's head ,stunning him. When the second round started Cooper was much more careful and Folley forced him onto the back foot. Half way through the round, with Henry forced out of his comfort zone, Folley landed flush and Cooper was finished.

I was wondering, are there any lost* fight films/kinescopes of any of the Henry Cooper fights
that had aired on the BBC ?
(The BBC of course notiously wiped just about all of their video archives in the early 1970's in order to save expense and reuse
video-tape.)
what was the first professional fight of Henry Cooper's that aired on the telly ?

So much of early TV was lost that way because they thought video-tape was too expensive - TV producers were notorious for being very, very cheap!

There is a bit of the Ingemar Johansson fight.
Most of the Brian London 2nd fight
Of Course the Joe Erskine fight with poor Joe laying over the bottom rope.
Folley 1st 4 rds. and the second Folley fight full.
I would have loved to see Henry against Dick Ricardson and Pietro Tomasoni

Mostly early television shows from 1940's to early 1950's were recorded on kinescope,so that they could be flown to the west coast(USA)
and shown on the network there at a proper hour. They didnt start to video-tape shows until about 1956 I think.

well at least maybe he can find out where the BBC got ahold of that particular kinescope to use in the 1984 BBC programme THE FIGHT.
Were was it previously ?

also what was the name of the BBC show that the June 1963 fight originally broadcast on ?
was it shown live or recorded for later viewing ?

Well the ref raised his hand didnt he ?
(its obvious this highlight reel of selected moments of ten full rounds was edited by a Zora Folley fan, for his portfolio perhaps ).

In the first fight torn glove fight, how much time did Ali get to recover between rounds? I've heard anywhere from just 5 more seconds to 15 minutes! Would appreciate it if you could clear that up. Video never really answered that question for me.
