Hammond vs George for Commonwealth title - confirmed for Nov 25th In Toowoomba

Post by Like a Boss »

Cameron Hammond will meet Kris George for Commonwealth welterweight title in November or December in Toowoomba, Queensland.

"This is history for Toowoomba," Brendon Smith said.

"Both fighters have signed, now we will confirm a date, and it will be in Toowoomba".

"I have the signatures of both men and I have a verbal agreement with the Commonwealth to sanction the bout".

Lets hope going the Commonwealth route goes as well for Cameron as it did for Lucas. It seems to be a common way to go for fighters under Mat Clarke with his link to Hatton promotions. Would be great to see a young aboriginal guy from Moree achieve success and maybe inspire more kids from there down the right path. :TU:

I agree that the commonwealth route might work for him but he has to win it first. Kris George is a good fighter who can punch. His only loss was at light welter. He's a massive welter. Good match up. 25th of November at Rumours in Toowoomba.

Regarding this fight and the Commonwealth title route :

HAMMOND VS. GEORGE ON TAP FOR AUSTRALIA NEXT MONTH

The stage is set for an explosive encounter between welterweights Cameron Hammond and Kris George in Toowoomba Australia on November 25th when they clash for the Commonwealth Title. Hammond is a 2012 Olympian and 16-0 as a pro. He's promoted by England's Ricky Hatton. Kris George is 11-1 and a former Queensland champion. He's promoted by Brendon Smith.

George said, "I've fought two undefeated fighters before in the pro's, both very credentialed amateurs, and I knocked them both out in the third round. You can't predict anything but I'm supremely confident I can win, twelve round fights are a big mental game and that's where I think I have the edge."

In response, Hammond said with a smile "He can say all he wants, I'm going to let my punches do the talking on the night, I don't have much to say about that.

"I'm fit, I'm ready for twelve hard rounds I'm coming to win, by knock out possibly, we'll see on the night." Hammond said.

"This is history," Promoter Brendon Smith said. "Never before has a Commonwealth title be contested in Toowoomba and its around thirty years since a Commonwealth title has been contested in Queensland.

"A perfect example is Lucas Browne... Browne won the Commonwealth title and that earned him a WBA title shot. That's what is at stake for Kris and Cameron. And the best thing about it, it's all going to happen right here in Toowoomba in front of our loyal fans."

There is no love lost between the pair. The mind games have already begun.

"Anyone who saw them both in the ring on the weekend at our show TGW & Smithy Brings the Big fights 14 would know this is going to be a hell of a fight," Smith said. "There is definitely respect there but at the same time there is no love lost. When Cameron spoke on the microphone Kris didn't take his eyes off him and it was the same when Kris spoke, Cameron glared at him."

"Not only is this a super fight because of both boys credentials but also styles make fights. It's the classic boxer vs the puncher.

"Cameron Hammond is arguably the neatest boxer in this country and Kris George is arguably pound for pound the biggest puncher in the country. Put them together and it'll be a great spectacle for the crowd."

Kris sounded very confident at the last fights that he will knock out Cameron Hammond. Hammond is a great boxer with a fine amateur background. Kris can punch but has a good boxing brain also. Looking forward to this one.

117-111, 119-109, 116-111

(according to Ray Wheatley)

A Hammond points win or a George stoppage seemed more likely outcomes. Will be interested to have a look at the fight.

Congratulations to George, Commonwealth titles for Aussies are far too few and far between.

I gave Kris a real good chance in this fight but was a little surprised how easy he won the fight. Hammond is a world class boxer and Krissy beat him at his own game. Showed real poise and boxing skills shifting from southpaw to orthodox during the fight.
Brent Rice won the first 4 rounds in his Aussie Title win but Matt Casboult came home like a train and was very unlucky not to win. The rounds Rice won were reasonably close, but the rounds Casboult won were more clear cut. Close fight and couldn't argue a great deal with the decision, but I thought Casboult might have edged it.

Thought it was 50/50 going into the fight. But the was for Hammond by UD/George by stoppage. I certainly didn't expect George to win by a wide UD. Ahh, the sweet science!

Yeah I thought if Kris was to win on points he would have to land a couple of knockdowns. The knockdown in round 6 was a flash knockdown and didn't really make a difference. Kris pretty much outboxed Hammond for the biggest part of the fight. I knew Kris could fight but that was a great performance.

"The UK, The USA whatever fight makes the most sense - I'm ready".
