'opkins v Smiff
'opkins v Smiff
Old Man Bernie is fighting crude New York slugger Joe Smith on December 17th.
Personally I think Hopkins will win as he knows more than anyone else still fighting & he's smart enough to use his aging body sparingly.
But I would love it if Smith battered him on a round or two.
Nothing against Hopkins. It would just be exciting to have another name in there with Gvozdyk, Beterbiev, Browne & Shabranskyy as the contenders for the throne.
Can you imagine a fight between Smith of Long Island & Browne of Staten Island at Madison Square Garden if they both keep blasting people out of there?
On a side note I just looked up Hopkins last KO & it was De La Hoya in 2005. DLH was as low as 128 pounds in one fight. Funny old game, innit.

Don't see the point.
He has nothing to prove. I'm more disspointed Miura and Salido is off the card.

I was hoping it was Paul 'Smigga' Smith when I opened this. Now he's worked his way back into contention, he deserves a big fight. Never mind, he'll just have to do 6x3's on the AJ-Wlad card.

Paul Smith has too much power for Hopkins. Would be a massacre...said no one evermickey1975 wrote:I was hoping it was Paul 'Smigga' Smith when I opened this. Now he's worked his way back into contention, he deserves a big fight. Never mind, he'll just have to do 6x3's on the AJ-Wlad card.

Hope Hopkins wins but I'm favouring Smith purely on the basis one day Hopkins will slow dramatically due to his age.
With his long layoff that time might be now.

Maybe my memory exaggerates but didnt Pepe Correia (sp) not say something similar? Not about Hopkins obviously but seemed to think he was the next big thing on The Cotender. Haha Pepe and his 'overhand right'!lefthook82 wrote:Paul Smith has too much power for Hopkins. Re: 'opkins v Smiff
Bit of a pointless fight Hopkins hasn't got anything to prove really maybe this will be the bout that catches up with him...
Although he still has great ring IQ and is a very knowledgable fighter

Re: 'opkins v Smiff
Hopkins really can make things ugly neutralising and negating an opponent.
Hope Smith can have the answers. And go on to an exciting fight with Adonis Stevenson.
Really don't want another Hopkins v Pavlik type of fight.

Looks like Hopkins wants a stoppage win for the first time in a while, given how limited Joe Smith seems to be. Or am I being unfair?

Re: 'opkins v Smiff
I've rooted against Hopkins a fair few times in his career and a lot of stuff he said has been bang out of order, especially the whole "never lose to a white guy" poo against Calzaghe but I have grew to like him,I like listening to him talk he's pretty clever and has more sense to talk than most boxers and his achievements cannot be denied just incredible what he has done in nearly 30 years,to be fighting at a good level at nearly 52 is remarkable, to even go the distance with Kovalev is an achievement in itself and to be able to hang on after such a torrid last round is crazy
Smith Jr KO'n Fonfara in a round was a massive upset despite Joe having power going in,Fonfara is durable and Smith just blew him away,he did catch Fonfara cold but he showed great finishing instincts in that fight
Its hard to tell what the year out will do to Hopkins because what he's doing is unheard of but he really surely must be in danger of ageing overnight? Bernard is always in tremendous shape and I fancy him to old man Smith and win wide on the cards

Looking forward to Usyk/Mchunu on the undercard,I still wasn't completely sold on Usyk until he beat Glowacki last time out I thought he was excellent in that fight,I've not seen Mchunu I don't think but I do remember him beating Chambers and getting KO'd by Makabu,I was looking through his record there,I noticed he was also KO'd earlier in his career by a guy with a modest record so going on that I have to fancy Usyk to look really good before stopping him late

Smith was doing his day job working on a building site when he got the call to fight Hopkins.
Hopkins is a man who has been living and breathing the sport for the best part of 30 years.
Hopkins was already a professional fighter before Smith was even born and has probably forgotten more than this forum combined knows about boxing.
This has Hopkins UD written all over it.

Re: 'opkins v Smiff
As with Mayweather, Klitschko & Ward, the duller the fight is tonight the better for 'opkins.
If Smiff has a chance then it has to be early on & 'opkins has shown some vulnerability in the early stages - although against fighters with a better pedigree than Smiff.
I would LOVE for SMIFF to win. I want a showdown between him & Marcus Browne. That would be HUGE in New York.
OK, maybe not huge but it would be one for the fight fans.

Re: 'opkins v Smiff
Hopkins is 51 years old, only a month shy of 52 years old. Hasn't fought in 2 years, and on that occasion when he did fight he took what was probably the worst beating of his career, and lost every round.
Even though Smith's style would be tailor made for him throughout most of his career at a certain point you just can't get it done no more, regardless of their style, and it's not like Smith just outright sucks either. He's 22-1 with 18 KO's, coming off his biggest win, and he's only 27 years old.
Smith just needs to fight smart here and not chase the knockout round after round. He needs to be just looking to connect on Hopkins and outwork him as much as anything because there should be no way that a 27 year old fighter can't outhustle a 51 year old fighter.

Hopkins hasn't scored a KO win in 12 years. A Hopkins KO win tonight would be borderline shocking to me. I don't think he has it in him to stop guys like this anymore, and hasn't for a long while.olij999 wrote:mickey1975 wrote:I was hoping it was Paul 'Smigga' Smith when I opened this. In fact he's NEVER scored a KO victory as a Light Heavyweight. Not even once.

He once said he's "not stupid enough" to go for knockouts.
Make no mistake, he'll be trying to old man his opponent for the 12 round distance.

Re: 'opkins v Smiff
I think there is more chance of BHop suffering cardiac arrest in the ring due to his old age then Smith landing a punch on him. Smith is not a contender material, he is very very basic.

Exactly. I think anyone can be caught cold. Fonfara took bombs from Stevenson who surely hits harder than Smith. We saw Badou Jack take right hands from Groves but he'd been starched in one when caught cold. I completely put a line through the Fonfara fight.
Put it this way, Kovalev would murder Smith. No way he would go the distance. Hopkins was able to do that. If the Hopkins of the Kovalev fight turns up he should be too crafty for Smith. Kovalev is 1000x higher level than Smith in every department.
Re: 'opkins v Smiff
Even if Smith hits harder then Stevenson its not going to do him much good. Bernard wont stand there like Fonfara. Remember he defused a very big punching Tavoris Cloud without any trouble.TheLeprechaun wrote:Tarkus wrote:I think there is more chance of BHop suffering cardiac arrest in the ring due to his old age then Smith landing a punch on him. BHop could be shot to bits of course. Or maybe there is something more to Smith then what we have seen. Otherwise there is only one outcome to this fight. Hopkins by UD.
Re: 'opkins v Smiff
Hope Smith goes in there something like what Dave Tiberi did vs James Toney, educated pressure and high level of activity, loads of body shots and give loads of angles of attack.
Then goes on to challenge Adonis Stevenson in an all action encounter.
I know, I'm hoping for a lot.

He's older than Eubank Snr
Re: 'opkins v Smiff
Hopefully Smith knocks him in to next week. I respect Hopkins as a fighter but he's way past it and it would be nice for the youngster to get the W. Stage is set for a Hopkins win though.
