Frankie gavin, probably the most skillfull boxer i have seen for many years..........but why oh why the indiscipline as regards diet etc. time and time again he has let himself and others down
what a fight and gavin showed skills and guts......, but im left feeling short changed with regards to what heights frankie gavin could have reached in world boxing.

Frankie needs to retire sadly, for his own safety. You can't play at boxing.
Re: Frankie gavin......why oh why
its a mega shame, he is so so talented. only (in my opinion) the defensive skills of galahad and napa compare to frankie gavin.
Re: Frankie gavin......why oh why
The problem is he doesn't have the power to be a top pro.
As skillful as Gavin is- you've gotta have Whittaker-esque defensive skills to make up for the lack of power.

Re: Frankie gavin......why oh why
Power is definitely holding him back. He hit Eggy plenty but all the shots just pinged off him.lefty wrote:The problem is he doesn't have the power to be a top pro.

Frankie also seems to pull his punches and slap a bittoo, which doesn't help generate power.

Yeah. No idea where he goes from here bar retirement.crusader wrote:Power is definitely holding him back. He hit Eggy plenty but all the shots just pinged off him.lefty wrote:The problem is he doesn't have the power to be a top pro.

He landed some lovely shots tonight, but they lack the impact. If he was anything near a concussive puncher he would have won that fight handily.
He looks like he can do a weight division less.

I think Gavin would have somewhat of a shot against Burns if he dropped down. He'd have to box to the best of his ability though.

For all his amazing skills, he's always been fairly easy to hit. No power and getting tagged + not giving 100% commitment? Never happening.
Re: Frankie gavin......why oh why
Good fight tonight! Hats off to Gavin! Just one of them things!
Re: Frankie gavin......why oh why
Most overrated (in the trade) fighter of the last 10 years. Probably looks great in the gym, pulling off his slick moves. Got a massive let off when he got a home decision against Curtis Woodhouse back in 2011. Hasn't done anything to convince but STILL people go on about him.

Worst thing about it is people will continue to big him up long after he's retired too.

The best boxers ever all had a whole set of skills and discipline is one of them.rhino222 wrote:Frankie gavin, probably the most skillfull boxer i have seen for many years..........but why oh why the indiscipline as regards diet etc. time and time again he has let himself and others down

Not to nitpick (obviously meaning I'm nitpicking) but I'd say that Discipline, or the propensity for it is an inherent attribute, rather than a skill.keithmoonhangover wrote:The best boxers ever all had a whole set of skills and discipline is one of them.rhino222 wrote:Frankie gavin, probably the most skillfull boxer i have seen for many years..........but why oh why the indiscipline as regards diet etc. time and time again he has let himself and others down

It's something you are born with. We all have a certain percentage of discipline you could say. People wouldn't really choose on purpose to be lazy and fail. It's something they can't help. For some guys in Gavins position, making 140 is a piece of cake - just a matter of being strict on the diet and training hard. For Gavin to do the same it would require much more mental effort. That's genetic.

Totally disagree. People join the army with no discipline, but they learn it there. It's not very often you're wring mate, but with the greatest of respect, this is one of those times.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Not to nitpick (obviously meaning I'm nitpicking) but I'd say that Discipline, or the propensity for it is an inherent attribute, rather than a skill.keithmoonhangover wrote:The best boxers ever all had a whole set of skills and discipline is one of them.rhino222 wrote:Frankie gavin, probably the most skillfull boxer i have seen for many years..........but why oh why the indiscipline as regards diet etc. time and time again he has let himself and others down

its difficult to say where he should go from here..
Re: Frankie gavin......why oh why
Not sure I agree with that. I think it's more of a learnt behaviourand thus a habit. Habits are hard to change however but it can be done.TheLeprechaun wrote:jamesmcdonnell wrote:Not to nitpick (obviously meaning I'm nitpicking) but I'd say that Discipline, or the propensity for it is an inherent attribute, rather than a skill.keithmoonhangover wrote:

That's what everyone likes to believe as it gives us the feeling that we are in control.
The truth is that it's largely genetic. Think about giving up smoking for example. Some people can give it up with some effort. For others they just can't give it up no matter what level of effort they put in. They could put in more effort than the other person who gave it up but still be unable to give it up. I know a lad who has kidney cancer, had a kidney removed recently and is still smoking. He tried really hard to give it up but couldn't.
Re: Frankie gavin......why oh why
I see what you're getting at but I'm still not entirely convinced. How do you know lad you know truly wants to give up smoking? He might know he needs to for the sake of his self but deep down he enjoys smoking and thus subconsciously could be self sabotaging.TheLeprechaun wrote:lefty wrote:Not sure I agree with that. Regardless of the habits/genetics etc debate, whatever the cause we can all agree that Gavin doesn't have the dedication and discipline required to reach the best of his potential in the most appropriate division. He boxed at light middleweight last night, that's madness.

Sorry, totally disagree with that. The idea that discipline is genetic just gives people excuses. There is absolutely no reason why a person can't force themselves to work hard and stay disciplined.TheLeprechaun wrote:lefty wrote:Not sure I agree with that. This, excellent amateur but just not a good pro.
