Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr is back

Former WBC world middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr will end a 17 month hiatus in December when he faces unheralded Dominik Britsch in his native Mexico.

The 30-year-old son of legendary Julio Cesar Chavez has not fought since his 10-round decision win over Marcos Reyes in July 2015, which was fought at a 170lb catchweight.

Three months prior to that Chavez suffered a big setback when Andrzej Fonfara forced him to retire after nine rounds of their light-heavyweight clash.

Chavez has struggled with making weight in the past and his December 10 fight with Britsch is reportedly set at a 169lb catchweight.

The fight also marks the return of Chavez to his former promoter, Zanfer, after a spell under the Top Rank banner. He is still managed/advised by Al Haymon.

Inactivity has plagued Chavez’ career over the past few years and it is unclear which weight division he will box in after this fight with Britsch. The lightly-regarded German was set to box WBO super-middleweight champion Gilberto Ramirez, however that fight was scrapped when Ramirez injured his hand.

That suggests Chavez will campaign at 168lbs and, thanks to his cosy relationship with the WBC, could find himself within touching distance of a title shot in the not too distant future.

There was a time when I was hugely impressed with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., especially after the way he wore down Andy Lee during their fight. However, that contest was more than four years ago and he’s looked absolutely dire in every single fight since.

I guess that he should now possess the maturity and the youth to be able to rebuild his career, but he’s a wealthy man and I’m not so sure that he has the motivation to do so.

If he is anywhere close to where he was before* I'd make him favourite over Abraham, Murray and maybe Bute. Fights with Anthony Dirrell, Sturm or Chudinov would be winnable. If he could beat a couple of those guys and pick up a belt doing it that'd count as success to me. On his best day he'd maybe give DeGale trouble style wise would otherwise be beaten by the better fighters at the weight (Jack, Groves, Ramirez, probably Callum Smith as well).

Why would you make a fight a 169 catchweight? If you can't make 168 might as well make the catchweight at least in the 170-172 range

I can't find a fight I enjoyed watching more than when Junior was knocked silly by Fonfara. I must have watched that knock down 20 times over and over again because it felt so good. Junior is a punk and that's the only way to say it really. He's grew up a rich snotty kid that never had to work a day in his life and it carried over into his pro career where he thinks that success is owed to him. Was too cool to fight in the amateurs. Just had to skip to the show because he's Julio's boy.

The worst part is that the kid has a ton of talent and a heck of a chin. If he would have had to put the work in like most up and coming boxers, he'd probably be one heck of a fighter. But he skipped too many steps in my opinion and it's amazing he's gotten so far with the limited amount of effort he's put out. I'm a hypocrite though because i love to watch his fights. I have to admit it.
