Joe Frazier (FOTC) vs Riddick Bowe (Holyfield I)
How do you see this one panning out styles wise. Bowe doesn't have the on the toes movement that Ali did. Bowe took a lot of left hooks in the Holyfield fight. Frazier could only come forward and wasn't to difficult to find with punches.
What happens? How does it happen?

Re: Joe Frazier (FOTC) vs Riddick Bowe (Holyfield I)
Bowe was in the shape of his life for that fight.
Against a FOTC era Frazier, he would simply be too big and too sharp.
I can see Bowe knocking Frazier down early with one of his dangerous uppercuts.
Joe would be in serious trouble but survive the early onslaught.
However, around the middle rounds, Frazier catches Bowe with a left hook on the inside and drops his bigger foe.
Now its Bowe who is in danger of being kayoed
But he smartly grabs and ties up Frazier, surviving the storm.
Frazier begins to tire by the 10th round and from then on, Bowe both boxes smartly from the outside, and even outworks Frazier when in close.
Bowe's size and weight prove too much and he coasts to a close but deserved unanimous decision.
As an aside, I'll say that the Bowe who was out of shape in so many of his fights, would have dropped a decisive decision to Frazier.
Joe would simply have battered him on the outside, and Bowe would have had no answer but to hold on and do little punching.
But on the night when both were at their best, Bowe takes the bout.

^i agree. At his best bowe would have been too much for joe. Bowe himself had an excellent insulide game and an uppercut--its not like joe is just going to boar his way inside and ha e his way.
On the outside bowe throws a lot if jabs but gets nowhere. It would definitely turn into a close range fight. Even in his brief prime bowe was no speed demon.
If bowe is out of shape or post holy trilogy it would be like the mathis fight all over again.

Riddick Bowe beats the great Joe Frazier any day of the week. But, he loses to the fighting machine of Smokin' Joe of March 8, 1971. On that night, I can't see no heavyweight in history beating Smokin' Joe.
Like I said, the night of TFOC belongs to Joe Frazier against anyone. Any other night besides that one, it's all Big Daddy's!

What so Frazier would have beat Bowe only the Frazier from March 8th 1971 I was only 1 year old was that Ali v Frazier in the fight of the century so if they fought before Frazier beat Ali in the FOTC Bowe would win.............. I certainly do not agree with that Bowe beat Holyfield in a clear un dec in their 1st fight but it was not all one way traffic Frazier was a monster and he was a BETTER fighter then Holyfield Frazier beat Ali so right away I give Frazier the edge because he was fighting The Greatest in Ali...Frazier he fought the same way all the time Bowe would struggle with Joe the longer the fight went if Joe could put Ali down in the FOTC he would just about put Bowes light's out Joe would know just like he did against Ali that night he beat him that the key to victory would be PRESSURE and against someone like Bowe who was not anywhere near Ali in their mindset and resilience when it came to digging in and fighting your opponent's fight something that Frazier would force Bowe to do people talk about how good Bowe was fighting on the inside
Re: Joe Frazier (FOTC) vs Riddick Bowe (Holyfield I)
I'd take Frazier. He was relentless vs Ali and it was only Big G's crushing power that done him, along with his ailing body. UD12 in a hellacious war.

Frazier wasn't even peak for the fotc.disagree that he was a better fighter than holyfield. Bowe was a monster.that night. Lean to him by tight decision but Joe would be charging late l.

Against a prime holyfield? I've never seen a fighter that I'd pick to do that.keithmoonhangover wrote:A monster would have completely dominated the fight.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Bowe was a monster.that night.

A monster doesn't struggle with Bert Cooper. I love Holyfield, but he wasn't a 'monster' and neither was Bowe.Tomasino wrote:keithmoonhangover wrote:A monster would have completely dominated the fight.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Bowe was a monster.that night.

Frazier. I don't think Bowe was in his league. I know it's an unpopular point of view...

I agree mate. Bowe doesn't have the power to hold him off or the foot movement to avoid him.Ezzard wrote:Frazier. I don't think Bowe was in his league. I know it's an unpopular point of view...

Hmmm...fair enough. As far as heavyweights go, would you describe any as 'monsters'?

I don't really use the term 'monster', but if I had to, it would be for Dempsey (vs Willard) Foreman (vs Frazier and Norton) and Tyson (vs Spinks).Tomasino wrote:Hmmm...fair enough. As far as heavyweights go, would you describe any as 'monsters'?
Re: Joe Frazier (FOTC) vs Riddick Bowe (Holyfield I)
If Frazier can slip Ali's faster, more accurate and way more consistent jab...then I don't see what Bowe has. He will make a great fight of it. But I can't see him living with Frazier's engine down the stretch.keithmoonhangover wrote:I agree mate. The only thing Bowe has on him is size.

Well, you may be right Ezzard, but Big Daddy had more other great qualities than just sizeEzzard wrote:If Frazier can slip Ali's faster, more accurate and way more consistent jab...then I don't see what Bowe has. Smokin' Joe was a monster against The Greatest in FOTC and Jerry Quarry in their first fight.Tomasino wrote:keithmoonhangover wrote:I don't really use the term 'monster', but if I had to, it would be for Dempsey (vs Willard) Foreman (vs Frazier and Norton) and Tyson (vs Spinks).Tomasino wrote:Hmmm...fair enough. To me, Smokin' Joe's performance in FOTC was the best performance of all-time, due to the circumstances.

I for one believe Evander Holyfield was everything a champion should be inside and outside the ring he was and still is in my top 10 favourite fighter's of all time [and that's something in its self not that i'm the king of the boxing fan's] but in my view Evander was not on the same level as Frazier and their style's are not the same and that's what makes fight's style's......... Bowe would be up against a different beast when in against Smokin Joe

To me, Smokin' Joe's performance in FOTC was the best performance of all-time, due to the circumstances.
1. The fight was the most anticipated fight in history.
2. Ali and Frazier were undefeated. It was the FIRST TIME that two undefeated champions were at it.
3. The fight exceeded the expectations in this unforgettable night. People got their money's worth that is for sure.
4. The performances of both gladiators were in another level. Smokin' Joe and The Greatest were super terrific that night.
5. There will never be a fight to top that magical night. That will NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN.

Believe it. The Fight of the Century will never be surpassed. The performance of both fighters were for the ages. And the climax and anticipation was something that will never happen again.
