Lightweights: Ken Buchanan vs Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

Post by elmersalsa »

Two beautiful boxers!!! One a Hall of famer (Buchanan) and the other one (Mayweather) without a doubt, a future hall of famer and the best fighter today!!!

Matching skill by skill, I got to go with Buchanan on this one by decision. What do you guys think??? :TU: :TU: :TU:

I think at lightweight, Floyd was at his absolute best and I can only see a great pressure fighter beating him. Buchanan had an excellent jab, but was much slower relative to Mayweather, and did not throw a ton of punches. I think Floyd picks off the jabs and doesn't allow Buchanan to hit him with better punches. And I think with Floyd's hand speed he could hit Buchanan consistently. So I have Floyd winning easily, by a middle round KO.

Floyd definitely wins this one. Ken just doesn't have the right style to beat Floyd. They're both great boxers, but as far as pure technical boxing skill Floyd is about as good as anybody has been in the sport.

I personally think it would be virtually impossible for anybody to outbox Floyd.

In watching some film and what I've studied, I think the only lightweight that could possibly outbox Floyd would be Benny Leonard. He had the combination of movement and accuracy of his punches to pull the trick along with enough punching power to keep Floyd honest. Other than that, I agree.

Yeah I didn't mean to suggest that NOBODY that ever lived couldn't do it, I just meant to say I think very, very, very few could do it. Benny Leonard is certainly a legendary Lightweight who I could see holding his own with Floyd.

Also with regards to people being able to out-box Mayweather Jr.

The first name comes to mind is Hearns.

I think only 130-147 should be looked at for that. Think a good bunch of 154ers would be too much for Mayweather due to size advantage (McCallum, Norris, Wright, etc.)
I think Hearns would knock Floyd the f*ck out. And outbox him in the meantime

I do not understand the way Ken Buchanan gets so unappreciated here. I have seen his films in his prime and he had a great jab. A fast one. I do not think Mayweather would outspeed him.

Some other fighters that I think that would beat the great Floyd Mayweather, Jr at lightweight are:
Ismael Laguna
Carlos Ortiz
Joe Brown
Pernell Whitaker
These 5 guys were beautiful boxers.
