Tonight was a perfect example of why boxing's popularity has been declining
A Columbian boxer who grew up in poverty comes to the USA and fights a much bigger privileged American boxer. He gets robbed on the scorecards, even though he deserved to win every round.
An exciting Russian boxer with three world titles fights a privileged American boxer. The Russian like the Columbian grew up in poverty, while the American boxer was the son of a prosperous businessman. The Russian gets paid $2 mil while the boring American who demands all the advantages in every fight receives $5 mil. The American does a lot of clinching and wrestling to survive in the fight. The Russian clearly wins the fight, but is robbed on the scorecards.
Why would anybody buy another PPV after tonight? Oh I know there are a few despicable people who don't mind seeing robberies as long as the African-American boxer is the one gifted the win.
But all DECENT, HONORABLE people want fair officiating in sports, and will lose interest in boxing after they see how corrupt it is.

I didn't see the first fight you are referring to, but by all accounts, you are right.Freedom2013 wrote:A Columbian boxer who grew up in poverty comes to the USA and fights a much bigger privileged American boxer. He gets robbed on the scorecards, even though he deserved to win every round.

Kovalev didn't clearly beat Ward - around 40% of posters on this forum thought Ward won, as did many impartial observers and writers. It was a close fight that could have fairly been scored for either man. Kovalev was unlucky to lose, especially a unanimous decision, but the judges did a good job, with the possibly exception of the scoring of the 10th round.

The scoring of that round alone changes the winner of the fight. Ridiculous scoring.

Agreed
I really don't see how anyone can give that fight to Ward. He was outfought, knocked down, outlanded, ended up badly bruised, kept clinching and spoiling. Yet somehow got the decision?
I had Kovalev winning by 2 rounds plus a point off Ward for the knockdown.

Are you referring to the 10th, or the whole fight in general?Ian1973 wrote:jezzamundo wrote:I didn't see the first fight you are referring to, but by all accounts, you are right.Freedom2013 wrote:A Columbian boxer who grew up in poverty comes to the USA and fights a much bigger privileged American boxer. Through a combination of having watched the fight and the comments of others, this is how I see it:
Kovalev clearly won rounds 1, 2 and 10
Ward clearly won rounds 7, 8 and 11
Rounds 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 12 could fairly be scored for either fighter.
The judges gave Kovalev 2 of his 3 clear rounds
The judges gave Ward all of his clear rounds
The judges gave Kovalev and Ward 3 each of the swing rounds
I hardly think that getting one round wrong in a 12 round fight constitutes ridiculous scoring.
Re: Tonight was a perfect example of why boxing's popularity has been declining

Close fight,all three judges 114-113
Re: Tonight was a perfect example of why boxing's popularity has been declining
...from these stats above, I still see Kovalev one point ahead, but agree it was a very close one..
Re: Tonight was a perfect example of why boxing's popularity has been declining
The boxing establishment is such a small circle of the same shills every week.
Last week Dave Moretti scored Pacquaio vs Vargas 6-6.
This week he's right back to sitting ringside scoring an undercard fight.... the moron should have been chased out of Vegas last week.
Clearly these people are answerable to noone.
Well, except maybe Floyd. The only judge I ever seen get chased out the sport was CJ Ross for her 114-114 card in Floyd-Canelo.... even tho her Pac-Brad 1 card was worse.

How did you come to the understanding that blacks in America get preferential treatment?Freedom2013 wrote:Why would anybody buy another PPV after tonight? Oh I know there are a few despicable people who don't mind seeing robberies as long as the African-American boxer is the one gifted the win.
I know US racists have to spread some BS, but this one keeps reoccurring.
In the US, there are many white people who don't have any contact with black people.
There are many cities that are entirely white. Just not many of the big cities you would actually visit.
The small city people, who don't see blacks lives that often, create a reality that blacks are successful based on the celebrities they see.
However, go ask the white people in Baltimore, Newark, any southern state, about the lives of blacks.
The most you'll get it that blacks are lazy or whatever, but they know blacks aren't living in some US paradise.
I can take your European fighter bias. But the fact that you constantly try to make it seem like blacks get benefits in the US
because of celebrity life and Kobe, Jordan and Lebron is stupid.
It's typical racist sh!t. Similar to men who think women get everything.

By the way, tonight was all boxing ever needs.
A great fight with both fighters desperate to win.
Fair judging, although I'm torn between 114-113 Kovalev and 114-113 Ward.
I can't decide so I'm going with draw.
As Roy said, whoever wins the rematch will get credit for the first.

By the way, Compubox is simply a couple of people sat ringside pressing buttons subjectively deciding whether a punch landed or not. It's not statistical fact.Give up wrote:

If the scores had been distributed differently you might be right...but the scoring didn't make sense.. And It wasn't racism, it was nationalism.. The 10th round tells the story.. It was an obvious Kovalev round, but Ward needed it to win the fight.. All 3 judges put the round in Ward's W column to keep him alive.. This fight was a flagrant robbery.. When both Stepean A Smith and Roy Jones Jr, who are both friends of Ward and African Americans, say that Kovalev won the fight -- you pretty much know he DID win... Ward won 4 rounds tops -- and with a 2-point round that's a wide margin.jezzamundo wrote:I didn't see the first fight you are referring to, but by all accounts, you are right.Freedom2013 wrote:A Columbian boxer who grew up in poverty comes to the USA and fights a much bigger privileged American boxer. Ward could reasonably be given the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 11th and 12th rounds.Kalan wrote:If the scores had been distributed differently you might be right...but the scoring didn't make sense..
