Round 10: Ward v Kovalev
Round 10: Ward v Kovalev
Who did you score it for?
I thought round 10 wasn't close, solid Kovalev round imo (only viewed once, live).

Re: Round 10: Ward v Kovalev
It's the one round of the fight that the judges clearly got wrong - all three gave it to Ward.
That said, they scored rounds 3, 4 and 6 to Kovalev - all close rounds that could fairly have been scored to either fighter. I had Kovalev winning the 10th and Ward winning the 3rd, which resulted in a 114-113 Ward scorecard for me.

Re: Round 10: Ward v Kovalev
1: Kova (but close) 10 9
2: Kova with KD 10 8
3: Ward (but very close) 9 10
4: Kova 10 9
5: Kova 10 9
6: Kova 10 9
7: Kova 10 9
8: Kova 10 9
9: Ward 9 10
10: Ward 9 10
11: Ward (who gave Kova a bloody nose with his knee with illegal pushing tactics) 9 10
12: Kova 10 9
Kovalev won by 116 111, or well in my opinion.
*edit: I just rewatched round 7 and 8 because seriously all judges disagree with me and TBH I still think Kova won the 7th. I admit the 8th is a close one, but all of them for Ward still seems odd to me. Maybe the judges felt sorry for Ward or something, but he clearly wasn't better in those rounds.

You scored the first four rounds identically to me.asdfjkl wrote:1: Kova (but close) 10 9

Round 5 - I thought Ward edged, swing round.
Round 6 - agree, Kovalev edged it, swing round
Round 7 - strongly disagree, Ward clearly took this round for me
Round 8 - strongly disagree, clear Ward round
Round 9 - agree, Ward edged it, swing round
Round 10 - disagree, I thought it was a clear Kovalev round
Round 11 - agree, clear Ward round (and he was getting dirty)
Round 12 - swing round, but I gave it to Ward
I had it 114-113 to Ward, but would have been happy had Kovalev been awarded the decision, very close fight that could have gone either way.
Re: Round 10: Ward v Kovalev
Kovalev clearly won round 10 which automatically makes the official scorecards wrong.

Nope 3rd round could be for Ward

What does that have to do with round 10?
My point is anyone that gave round ten to Ward is clearly wrong as that round was clear. Other "close" rounds the judges decided the way they did but this is the one clear round they obviously got wrong.
Re: Round 10: Ward v Kovalev
I just gave 10 to Kovalev on second viewing. I thought throughout the round every engagement was equal with both landing as much as the other. But just towards the end Kovalev sneaked it by getting the final say.
Last night I had it 10-10

Re: Round 10: Ward v Kovalev
I have the exact same card as Glen Trowbridge apart from round 10 that I gave to Kovalev and - which was one of the tightest rounds in the fight. And we differed on round 12 which I have a draw- he gave Ward. So easy to see how a 2 round Kovalev win can easily become a 1 round loss.Ricky_ wrote:ginty wrote:Big Rd for krusher....I haven't seen the scorecards did any judges give it to ward
Re: Round 10: Ward v Kovalev
This is why i made the thread really, imo the story of the fight boils down to the scoring of round 10.Supremo wrote:I have the exact same card as Glen Trowbridge apart from round 10 that I gave to Kovalev and - which was one of the tightest rounds in the fight. I've not rewatched it but I remember thinking that rund 10 was a very clear Kovalev round. Had it been scored by Kovalev by any if the judges... they turn in a Kovalev card.
Re: Round 10: Ward v Kovalev
Round 10 was a dominant round for Kovalev, but after it ended, I knew the judges would give it to Ward and thus the fight. Why? The round ended with the crowd cheering because Ward had a split second of ring generalship at the last second. Judges always score with the hometown crowd. Bullshit but what can you do?

The 12th round was won by Kovalev as well imo, but the 2 judges that still mattered gave it to Ward anyway.Ricky_ wrote:ginty wrote:Big Rd for krusher....I haven't seen the scorecards did any judges give it to ward

3rd 4th 6th and 10th all to Kovalev... The judges scored the 10th for Ward because they were running out of rounds to give him late in the fight.jezzamundo wrote:It's the one round of the fight that the judges clearly got wrong - all three gave it to Ward.

Nickel and diming it doesn't make a difference at the end of the day.

Kovalev clearly won round 10 but if that judges gave him the 10-9 they knew it was curtains for Ward.
Re: Round 10: Ward v Kovalev
Not had a chance to rewatch the entire fight yet but I rewatched round 10 because it was bugging me.
Wasn't quite as dominant for Kovalev as i remember, but this round was a battle of jabs, and Kovalev clearly landed more.
What's more, Kovalev finished the round stronger. Ward tried to wind-up a bolo punch only to eat a left-jab, right on his wide open moosh
In the final seconds Kovalev landed the best shot of the round with a hard right hand, Ward leaned back with the punch to take the sting out of it, but it was still the best scoring shot of the round right before the bell.
In addition to landing the better punches, and landing the most punches, Kovalev controlled the centre of the ring on the front foot for the entire round.
I can't see how this round is scored to Ward, what a joke.

Even Paulie gave the 10th to Kovalev.
Re: Round 10: Ward v Kovalev
I thought that despite Ward's showmanship in the 10th, Kovalev did what he should have done in the mid rounds and stuck to his jab enough to win the round fairly comfortably. I was shocked to see no judge gave it to Sergey. 2 judges score that quite clear round to Kovalev and he would have won the fight.
Re: Round 10: Ward v Kovalev
And it was at this exact point iirc that Sky told us how Ward was feeling comfortable and doing so wellRicky_ wrote:What's more, Kovalev finished the round stronger. Ward tried to wind-up a bolo punch only to eat a left-jab, right on his wide open moosh![]()

Re: Round 10: Ward v Kovalev
Malignaggi actually awarded the 10th round to Ward, as did Matthew Macklin from the very same Sky Sports commentary team.boxing_rocks wrote:Even Paulie gave the 10th to Kovalev.
What on earth made you say such a bizarre thing, knowing full-well you were being extremely dishonest?
In terms of the overall scoring from the UK Sky Sports team:
* Paulie Malignaggi = 116-112 to Ward
* Matthew Macklin = 115-113 to Ward
* Spencer Fearon = 115-113 to Ward
* Paul Smith by three points to Ward
* Tony Bellew & Johnny Nelson 114-114 a draw
* Adam Smith = 114-113 to Ward
* Eddie Hearn = 114-113 to Ward
This must go down as one of the weirdest and most divisive marquee fights in boxing history, because global perceptions of the deserved winner vary greatly depending on which region of the planet you reside.
