Andre Ward offers Golovkin fight at 175

Post by Enlightened-One »

Here's an interview that has only just been published...

"Andre Ward offers Golovkin fight at 175"

“Personally, I don’t see the fight happening,” said Ward about the Golovkin fight. “He’s at middleweight and I’m at light heavyweight. But if he wants to come up and take that kind of challenge, I think it would be a tremendous fight for the fans to want to see.”

As clearly shown by the videos I've posted multiple times in this forum, Loeffler, Sanchez & Golovkin previously and repeatedly told the media that they would have only consider facing Andre Ward at 164lbs.

You are taking it out of context. Ward wanted 50% of money, and at that point it was ridiculous.

Anyway, negotiating with Ward is like eating sh*t. Who would want to go through that ?

Ward just likes to use GGG's name in the press, Golovkin's haters are his only fans. Though talking to EO has to worse than negotiating with ward. I don't know why anyone does that.

I would not be surprised if we see this fight happening before we see Canelo/GGG and this bull shenanigans of it happening somehow in 2017. Canelo doesn't even have a fight on the docket yet for 2017 so are we to believe that he's going to have just one fight prior to GGG at end of 2017. Not happening. Golden Boy will point to the injury as an out from what they promised.

Ward vs GGG is a great fight and I'm sure that it's on GGG's mind now. Fighting Kovalev doesn't look attractive anymore now that he's got a loss on his record even though I had him winning the fight. This is the most logical now. GGG has to start booking the big fights now. He can't keep on this 3 fight tour each year. He needs to settle down and do 1 or 2 fights at best but he needs to allow time for negotiations if he wants these big fights. He's been fighting too often to get these big fights done and negotiated out. GGG will knock Ward into the week after next week.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying with the exception of your opinion that a Krusher rematch "doesn't look attractive anymore." The rematch would be much bigger than the first fight and it needs to happen in a timely manner. 3G should go after Groves in London and follow it up with DeGale, both next year. That would set the stage for a fight with the winner of Ward v Krusher or whoever is the preminent LHW in 2018.

I do like that schedule that you lay out providing that DeGale is victorious in January as i expect that he will be. DeGale is another Brit that isn't afraid to fight anyone so I don't think that there's any doubt that he will accept GGG's challenge. The Brits are the only ones pushing the envelope these days trying to make fights. I've done a lot of Brit ripping in my years here and I'm glad to eat every single word. I couldn't have been more wrong. I prefer to watch Brits fight now which is crazy to me.

Honestly, i don't think that the rematch is going to do MUCH better than the first fight. In my opinion, the fight was ok. I wouldn't dare to say "great" because there were too many Manny/Floyd type rounds where a jab or two decided the round winner. Aside from the first two rounds, that fight was a loser. So i expect a rematch to look more like the latter half of the fight and it won't live up to hype. That's if Ward doesn't find a way out of it. If i'm him, i'm moving on and doing everything i can to avoid the rematch. There was a rematch clause though right? Thought i heard that.

But either way, the time is now for GGG. He needs to spend the next 2 years putting the best fights together he can. His goal was to unify the titles but at some point, he needs to abandon this goal because it will never happen. Not unless he wants to waste the next 3 years trying to get it done. He needs to move up or down in the next year if he wants to land some legacy type fights. Jacobs and Saunders are not those types of fights. Ward, Kovalev, Canelo, Thurman and Lara type fights.

I don't hear any Spence Jr. talk and I wonder why? The kid can't get any fights at 147 so I'd love to see him call out GGG. I think that he could give GGG all he could handle if he can stay away from big shots if that's even possible. How great of a fight would that be at say 158 or so? It wouldn't make much money but it should be the highest grossing fight in years if you take into account the talent that would be in the ring.

Ward certainly looks beatable, but GGG has unfinished business at 160, so I don't see the fight happening in 2017.

My wishlist:

GGG vs Jacobs in March '17
Canelo vs Saunders in May '17
Ward vs Kovalev in the first half of 2017
GGG vs Canelo in September '17
Ward-Kovalev II winner vs Beterbiev in late '17
GGG (assuming he beats Canelo) vs a 168lb beltholder in December '17
GGG vs the undisputed 175lb champ in 2018

I think that you are likely correct about the Krusher v Ward rematch ending up being less dramatic than the first fight. Of course, I disagree about the first fight being "a loser" after the first two rounds. I was glued to the screen the entire fight due to the drama that round two unleashed waiting for Krusher to finish it, then by round six realizing that the tide had changed and the most likely boxer to get stopped was actually Krusher. The sum of heart and determination and skill that both spilled in that ring that night is rarely witnessed in boxing or any other sport these days.

The rematch will be highly anticipated due to how close the decision was and the controversy that has ensued.

I agree that the time is now for 3G. If he can actually get The Jacobs deal done, it is a very credible fight. Hopefully, as suggested bt jezzamundo above, the GingerHead fight will come to fruition for September 2017. Then he should abandon the MW div and move up to fight whoever is the king of the 168 division in the first half of 2017. From there I would love for him to do to Ward what Andre did to Dawson, make him come down to fight. :OhYes:

I don't think that fights with Spence or other fighters moving up does much for 3G's legacy at this point. GingerHead does not count as a fighter moving up, btw. He is a quacker hiding south.
