Re: Prime Joe Louis vs. a prime Larry Holmes?
My opinion & interpretation of such a hypothetical match up if it were possible for it to occur is as follows:
Joe Louis was a fantastic champion in his day, practically a superhero right off the pages of the golden age of comic books. He had a very effective style for the heavyweights of the day, one punch KO power, killer instinct & a good chin.
What he would bring into a match with Holmes is his punching power & killer instinct as his most effective weapons. But, against Holmes he would be facing a boxer the likes of he'd never seen before. An opponent with the best assets of both Jersey Joe Walcott & Billy Conn, but of much superior size whose movement around the ring was superior to both those men & whose jab while doing so was as punishing as most average heavies right hand.
Holmes had his own fight ending weapon in "Big Jake", his right hand, which, while it didn't produce quite the same spectacular results as ol' Joe's right hand did it was almost as effective in ending fights. Holmes also had a very good chin.
IMO, Holmes size, his jab, his movement & "Big Jake" would all be too effective for Joe to overcome. He'd be very dangerous all the while, but I think Holmes stops him late in the championship rounds, say a KO13.

What advantages would Joe have over Larry?
Power; combination punching & short punches
What advantages would Larry have over Joe?
Size, reach, slickness & recuperative powers
What do you see happening in this fight?
Holmes's movement & jab gives Louis lots of problems; Louis decks Holmes, but Larry gets straight up & starts firing back
Who would win? Why?
Holmes on points. Larger size, silkier skills would give Louis all kinds of problems
Please explain.

I see this being similar to holmes/shaverd except louis doesnt let holmes off the hook and they go to war with louis getting the stoppage sometime in the tenth. If not, holmes survives, makes adjustments and wins a close split decision.
