Anthony Joshua's best and worst qualities

Post by kbackup408 »

So with the WK bout confirmed for April I want to know what people think AJ's best and worst qualities are ?

For me I think for a big unit AJ moves around well, clearly has immense power but I think his worst qualities is his lack of head movement and possibly improving his jab because Wlad has a seasoned jab

AJ is in a lucky era if you like, he's lucky that there arent the quality out there as there was back in the 90's. AJ can hand pick opposition there simply isnt the talent around at the moment so he has been blessed with a world title he certainly wouldnt have had back 15-20 years ago.

Best: He has a decent punch
Worse: Robotic

Yes mate those quotes can get annoying but I think he has been told to behave like this because if he started using his London slang no one will understand him

It's frustrating because when he actually acts like himself (usually when he's pissed off), I like him much more.

Yes mate I relate to him more when he's chilled and swearing he has like a dual personality what he shows on SkySports news and then IFL but this will continue till he retires mate

Best - he's becoming underrated, laughably in some cases

Worst - Media persona. Could be worse things than being respectful and "humble" in public but I prefer genuine people. Not saying he isn't genuine, just maybe poorly advised. I'm sure we'll see more for he real him as time goes by.

I think his media training is definitely making him a lot more cash than saying daft things he doesn't't mean and becoming vilified with a bad public persona.

It will probably be refreshing for Wlad to face someone relatively normal from the UK. He's had to put up with Haye, Fury and Chisora's antics during the Vitali fight over the years.

As for Josh..

Best: size, power and accuracy
Worst: head movement, possibly stamina/durability (not had chance to test yet).

It's a shame Wlad is a bit weak around the chin. Joshua could do with an opponent who not only stands up to his power but answers back with their own. Seems to be either or so far.

I'm a little bemused by all the commets that Joshua is a PR machine. The press pack, a notably cynical bunch, all seem to like him, and he has tons of mates in the game from his amateur days and since then. I've heard very few words against him from those in the game.

I've only met him a couple of times directly, and been at functions he was at a couple more times, and he was genuinely funny and likable.

I think the "stay humble" is more a manifestation of his views, albeit taken to an extreme, rather than pretending he's a bad boy and going for that audience.

Best - power and fitness
Worst - his transparent 'media' & humble nonsense, his total lack of charisma, not to mention his underdeveloped pork chop sized brain - have you seen how small his cranium is?

Ps sorry, that's qualities!

Best - power, strength, general fitness, discipline, focus

Worst - Chin - really because we know he's been bothered in the amateurs, and he wobbled quite badly against Whyte, and I feel like we've come to establish Whyte doesn't possess real power. In 18 fights, he's only been found ONCE. Quite astounding. But if he can defend it well, then who knows.

Strengths - Strength, power, physical size (height, weight, reach), he's a good accurate puncher with good timing, some variety in his shots and his shot selection is really good, all round a good offensive bag of tools. reasonable hand speed, particularly for a big lump. Solid guard
I feel this one is key - Composure, of course it's easy to be composed when you're on top, but I feel he showed it under fire against Whyte. Yes he let the occasion get to him and emotion played it's part and he made the odd mistake, but when he got tagged he kept his head and did the right thing. A good sign for when he steps up. There's not going to be the same heated atmosphere around a Klitschko fight and I feel big captain humble will deal well with the pressure of the big occasion

Weaknesses - Head movement, upper body movement are non existent and need to better if Wlad is anywhere close to his best
lack of top level experience

Question marks - Fitness beyond the half way point of a fight
Chin, has been tagged once and wobbled a little, other than that never tested. might be solid, might not be
In-fighting. Again, this should be an attribute he has at his disposal given his physical size, but we are yet to see evidence of how he will deal with Wlad when he ties him up. The ability to match him in a clinch and get an uppercut or body shot of when Wlad is wrestling could be of massive benefit
Counter-punching. Simply because he has seldom had to as he as always had the upper hand in fights and be the aggressor. Can he slip wlads shots and land quick counters?
Footwork - he is becoming a bit more mobile, moves well enough but he'll need to learn to move in and out of range a lot better if he's going to catch Wlad who will try to keep him on the end of jabs and right hands all night. He doesn't have the style or attributes to approach this one the way Fury did, so he's going to have to close distance better

On the footwork thing, there were a couple times against Molina, he adjusted his feet in an odd way, he did a little jig. Someone said before the bout he'd been working heavily on his footwork. On the couple occasions I saw him do it, it looked like he was adjusting his body position clockwise but Molina hadn't actually moved, it looked like something he might do if an opponent was moving laterally, but Molina wasn't and it left AJ kind of side on. I wondered if he was setting up a particular punch, but that never came. I'm not sure if I missed something but it looked oddly timed

I agree with you there. I'd still like to see a bit more of him though.

His skills and shape are the best, his experience is his weakest point. If he was in the ring with Klitschko during the Whyte fight, he might very well have lost that match.

Best quality - He has a habit of winning.

Worst quality - His habit of winning seems to upset some people.

He has a mean streak when his adrenaline's up (reminiscent of Benn), and he's increasingly patient. His downside's definitely his straight-man-in-a-gay-club footwork, and of course his chin against big punchers.

Some may say they've never seen it in a boxing ring proper.

fair point, if he was going for that kind of audience, I (and others) would doubtless be just as critical, so he can't win on that one really (short of having a genuinely 'different' personality like say Fury)
