Yeah probably, but it might just be that Amir basically supports the whole family and Haroon has realised that he's not going to make it anyway.

Makhdoom is going through the exact same thing that my wife went through. It's classic Muslim bigotry and female oppression. They go on about how it's against their culture to dress such a way, but it's just another attempt to keep women under control.

My wife's brothers would drink, smoke, take drugs, sleep with white women, but if she was out at 11pm, she's have the Spanish inquisition from her brothers and father.

I say good on Makhdoom for standing her ground, and standing up for what she believes in. It's not like she strolls around in her underwear. She's dressing very respectfully compared to a lot of women.

It has probably to do with the numerous culture clashes between the two outraged parties, Bolton-Pakistani and working class and Leabanese-American (upper middle class?) New Yorker, there she is in Bolton, probably hates her life there - can't get decent smoked salmon pretzels , they probably hate her because she isn't Pakistani and Amir could have done 'so much better' by marrying a girl, a second cousin 'from the village' back in Pakistan who knows how to make chapatis - it all bubbles over and Amir is rightly sick of it.
