Williams-Maskaev is utter tosh.

Post by deadpan »

This goes to emphasize Warren's lack of world clout.

If Tyson had lost to any of his opponents since Holyfield 2, they'd have gone straight into a world title fight. (Except Julius F, who has the same promotional stigma).

But can Frank manage it? No, the perpetually-vacant WBU title is up for grabs.

Danny can follow in the illustrious footseps of Johnny Nelson and claim one of the shittiest tea trays in Boxing.

Maybe then he can defend it against washed up no-marks 15 times like Ricky boy.

to be fair, October 9th aint long away, and it would take weeks negotiating with the big names. Maskaev would be favourite if Danny never fought Tyson...good 'keeping busy' fight. Warren had a October 9th date to fill, and why not make the most of Danny's new found fame?

Then if Danny wins, they can start negotiating for a big fight, early 05'.

Maskaev is far better than I had imagined, I really thought they would stick him in with an absolute patsy because people will flock to see him just on the basis that he beat Tyson.

I should imagine Maskaev will be coming to win too, after me moaning on another thread that they should have made Skelton-Williams this might even be as dangerous for Williams considering Skelton is still an unknown quantity above British level.

Nothing wrong with Maskaev in my book at all, only 2 months time, I think it's a decent level of opponent. There'll be a lot of negotiating done to get Danny a title shot, this is a good enough fight in the meantime.

I don't think is too bad of a match to keep things ticking nicely, as adamiw says i think Makaev would be a slight favourite and this would be perceived as a tough test for Danny had this fight been made without the Tyson fight ever happening. The WBU title is irrelevent, this is just a chance to keep Williams ticking over, that's providing he doesn't lose! Now that would be a disaster.

maskaev has probably been picked for his shoddy chin and frank has already seen that if danny gets hit by a big puncher, he can guts it out.

however, the difference in this fight may be that maskaev, unlike tyson, will hit danny with more than just single shots. I think oleg looked fine against Defiagbon in his last fight. more than capable of nailing danny.

however, we all know that if danny gets a combo in like that one against mike, oleg is finished.

This is a risky fight for Danny. Maskaev looked much improved defensively against Defiagbon. Actually showed some ability to step around his opponent. If Danny can beat him it will be a good victory.

Thats the way Danny! Being that you always fold under expectation, line up somebody that wont mean anything if you win, but will knock your world title prospects into oblivion if you lose.

As I said in the other thread its a strange match because I don't think the risk/reward calcuation adds up for someone on the brink of either a world title fight or a lucrative rematch.

As a fight its an excellent on and might concievably be Danny's toughest test to date - very happy with the match its, just find it strange to risk the mega pay days that should be coming.

As Duke McKenzie would put it 'absolutely' I can see it coming.

If he wins well, it means nada on the world stage. If he struggles or loses (highly conceivable to see him revert to his 'Plodalong Williams' persona) then he's blown whatever credit the Tyson win had accumulated, and it's back to Bethnal Green for 12k whilst forlornly calling out Audley.

Maskaev is a good fighter with a poor reputation.

A truly idiotic piece of matchmaking.

A strange match up? It's bloody ridiculous! What is the point in this at all - way to risky for a guy who's just beaten Tyson and who should be lined up for bigger things.

Matchfixer,

If we were 100% confident of Williams' ability, no fight except for a world title one should be considered "way to risky", many poster are now tipping him to beat Klitchko, if thats the case he should demolish Maskaev.

They have sparred together and probably team Williams no alot more about Maskaev than anyone here, they wouldn't have taken the match if Danny doesn't know he can do him - and as they have sparred he probably has a good idea.

I agree with your point, but thats why I chose the word strange as opposed to ridiculous. If Danny is world class, he should beat Maskaev if not then he still doesn't deserve to fight for a world title.

Yeah despite my initaial validation i am starting to have reservations about this fight, the win/loss factor does not seem to add up sufficiently. A win would gain little as Maskaev is only remembered for his losses these days and his questionable chin, however he is still dangerous and hits hard enough to win. Then Williams would be back on the Heavyweight scrap heap...it seems an odd fight to make :o

Fair point Stu, but given his track record i would have thought they may have manouevered Williams into a title shot ASAP and leave less room for error regardless of him proving whether he deserves a shot or not. How many deserving fighters fight for "world" titles every week...it appears a brave piece of matchmaking in these times of protected fighters and protected investments.

I'm just a little bit worried about a guy like Maskaev - he's got a very handy punch and is reasonably talented.

I agree with your last sentence there but why not exploit the Tyson victory for all he can rather than risk falling by the wayside with a fight like this.

Isnt Tyson a huge puncher? If Danny Williams is mentally prepared (which he wasnt against sam) he will win... He showed us how strong he was against Tyson, also his confidence will be booming and he cant afford to be shit, hes world stage now... :TU:

I can see it now... Danny Williams captures the WBU "World" ( ) Title... and then defends it against the real bad asses of the division.

Warren - "This guy is a genuinely dangerous opponent!!"

Danny opponent in December?

Masgaev will win via KO.

Business wise, this is a pretty stupid decision on Williams and Warrens part.

Something will happen and this fight will fall through (Harrison-Skelton, Hatton-Harris, ... might as well go for the trifecta).

Possibly. But both those fights, especially the second one you could see coming that they'd fall through because they are worthwhile fights. I can see Frank cacking himself by a fight Klitschko, but his mouth must be watering at a fight that could do more harm then good.

So who should he fight in that case?

There will be a lot of wrangling to try and get a shot at Vitali, should Danny just sit on his hands doing nothing for a while, hardly. If Danny is going to be a real player, then this fight should be no trouble, if he loses, then he likely didn't have a shot anyway....
