Shannon Briggs vs. Fres Oquendo Heads To Purse Bid, February 13

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

The World Boxing Association has ordered a purse bid between former world champion Shannon "The Cannon" Briggs and Puerto Rican contender Fres Oquendo for the vacant "regular" heavyweight title of the WBA.

The two teams were called to negotiate on the 2nd of January and they were given a deadline of 30 days before a purse bid was finally called. Because tehre has been no agreement between them, the WBA's Championships Committee has ordered the bid. The percentage of the split will be the same with 50% for both, because the belt is vacant and the minimum amount for this purse bid will be one million dollars.

The purse bid will be held on February 13 at the offices of the WBA in Panama City and will be directed by the Panamanian Aurelio Fiengo, who is a WBA board member.

The winner will have the obligation to defend the title against Russia's Alexander Ustinov, who is ranked third under the WBA.

Shannon Briggs and Fres Oquendo competing for the right to wear the WBA’s prestigious “regular” world heavyweight title! Mmmm, I really can’t wait to see that!

What do you reckon fellas? Do you think that this eagerly anticipated bout will surpass the popularity, excitement, significance and legacy of these renowned historical heavyweight championship fights?

• Muhammad Ali vs. George Foreman
• Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier
• Holyfield vs. Bowe
• Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield
• Lennox Lewis vs. Vitali Klitschko

If the fight took place 10-15 years ago, then fine. But the winner had to fight Ustinov! Briggs, Oquendo and Ustinov, I don't thinka re ranked top 15 by any other orgs, correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah 15 years ago for sure. I think these guys are only ranked by the WBA who love their recycled HWs. If Valuev or Ruiz came back & beat Charlie Zelenoff they would both be in the WBA top 15...

Could you imagine if nobody showed up to put in a bid? I don't think this fight would be a main event fight anywhere. I suspect it will be in Brooklyn or Chicago. It is an undercard fight at best but maybe RJJ's square ring will put in a bid as I think he still has Oquendo under his banner. I could be wrong though & I don't care enough to research...lol

£1 million is too much. WBA should've made an exception maybe like £500,000.

Briggs has grown a decent fanbase. Oquendo hasn actually been MIA for 4 years.

..it'a rhetorical question...but then again some people are prepared to watch and pay for these celebrity grudge matches that have very little to do with boxing...so, go figure...

1 million purse bid does seem a bit steep for what is, effectively, an eliminator not a real world title. However, with Briggs' social media following this could, if marketed cleverly, do well financially. Livestream it on FB and Instagram for peanuts and attract in the casuals...
