Spence: "Brook Getting Too Much Credit, Tried to Find a Way Out"

"Spence: Brook Getting Too Much Credit, Tried to Find a Way Out"

“He’s a great fighter, but he’s getting too much credit for fighting me,” Spence told BS.com on Monday after learning that the deal was done. “Who else was he gonna fight at 147?

Nobody. Who was he gonna fight at 154? He couldn’t fight someone else at 147, because if he didn’t fight me they would say he was ducking me."

“Who was he gonna fight at 54? There was nobody for him to fight at 54, no big names, the names he wanted. So he had to fight me. Everybody knows he took Triple-G for the money, so I do think he’s getting too much credit for taking this fight.”

“He was trying to find a way out. First he was looking for another title-holder. He was looking to fight either Danny Garcia or Keith Thurman. But they’re fighting each other, so he was looking for Manny Pacquiao. Manny Pacquiao wasn’t interested, so he was trying to fight Amir Khan. Then that fell through, so I was high last option."

“There was nobody at 154 for him to fight. Canelo already had a fight with somebody and the rest of the guys are with Al Haymon. He really didn’t have any options but to fight me, so that’s where he went.”

Totally agree with him. Brook and Hearn definitely dragged their heels with this. Glad the fight is happening though. Great match up

I disagree. There were more options available to Brook than Spence lays out in this piece. One of them was vacating the belt which would be the easiest of options to sell the public on.

I don't care how it happened but when you fight GGG and Spence Jr is back to back fights, you need to get credit. A lot of credit.

When Spence fights Triple G then I will take his criticisms seriously. Until then just fight and shut the hell up.

Spence: Don't Want To Hear Weight Excuses After I Beat Brook

Spence spoke to Boxing Scene..

“I don’t wanna hear no excuses. If he needs an excuse, he should’ve moved up.”

“Most fighters you run into have to lose a lot of weight to make weight. Nobody walks around at their fight weight. Even me, I’m a big welterweight. Me and Kell Brook are probably the same size. I walked around at 170-plus. I have to drop a lot of weight, too. I don’t see that as a factor at all and I’m not gonna rely on weight drain or him having to lose weight as a factor in the fight.”

My God you and the rest of these goofy nut jobs need a serious head examination. The ability to twist the truth is an amazing sight to behold, but keep it in the courtroom where it belongs. Kell is going to get the shit beat out of him. Again. And Kell's actual history of ducking and bluffing will be the topic on that day. You know, those things we call facts.

Regardless of the weight loss, Spence is the most powerful Welterweight since Mickey Walker.. He has a Middleweight's power with the speed of a Lightweight. He comes at you and keeps throwing. Floyd took on this kid when Spence was really green with about 14 fights, and got beaten up., Right hooks, left uppercuts, and 45's were finding the defensive master.. Khan and Pacquiao couldn't get Algieri out.. Spence showed Chris the door early, in routine fashion.. Thurman couldn't get rid of Bundu.. No problem for the Truth.

We will see what both boxers really have if this comes to pass.

I like Spence but I do not see the unstoppable force that you and others do. He hasn't faced anyone close to Brook's level while Kell has been in with 3G and Porter.

IMO, Spence takes too many unnecessary shots. If Brook lands some of the stuff he did on 3G we are going to find out just what Errol is made of. Who has Spence faced with serious pop (including FMJ)? Brook can put you down from unseen angles.

I am not impressed with Spence's speed or footwork. Much of his arsenal is projected in wide angles that an excellent pro can see coming. He is not great at cutting off the ring.

All that said, Spence is a badass, and a helluva lot bigger challenge than Khan. Brook will need to fight better than he has ever shown to secure a legit win in this one. Kell is quicker. He has better movement and footwork than Spence. But, if Kell fights the level he did v Porter he will get stopped. He needs to get Spence's attention early, somewhat the way Frampton did with LSC in the first fight. If Brook does not get Spence to respect his power, the American will walk and chop him down.

I am still not convinced that Brook can comfortably make 147. As a result I can envision a similar scenario to Ward v Dawson, although I cannot place Spence on Ward's skill level.

Vacating the belt is exactly one of the ways Spence was talking about, along with other fights. He was trying to find a way out. Fighting GGG was absolutely a no brainer for him in terms of money and keeping his belt. No one expected him to win anyway. Same thing Khan did with Canelo. I've never seen two guys get more credit for not even making it through half of a fight before.

Spence is right to say that he wasn't Brooks first choice of opponent, but that doesn't mean he was trying to duck him.
It makes plenty of sense to look for the biggest paydays available, all fighters do it.

Looking forward to this fight, Spence has bags of potential but Brook has that little bit more experience.

Just cant see Brook making the weight. He looked a ripped 160 fighter. Glad he's took the fight but he's either gonna pull out or come in overweight.

Mond if I take my negative head off, and the fight does go ahead.... One of the best fights on these shores for a long time.

Well not really, Brook has been wanting to fight Khan long before Spence came on the scene.

And Brook's training & management team have been encouraging him to move up to 154 for the past six months...
