Hows Frankie Gavin doing?

Post by TheLeprechaun »

I don't keep up with social media so I'm wondering if he's put anything out there?

Devastating loss last time out. Not sure where he can go from there.

I think that loss has finished him to be honest.

He was on the weekly boxing show on the local channel (made in Birmingham) a couple of weeks ago was still talking about grafting in the gym to get down to light welter where he wants to campaign. Took on a nutrionist etc.

Hr mentions Martin Gethin (could be as it was a local channel) to get him a ranking now that Gethin picked up an alphabet belt, but Gethins fighting Jack Catterall.

Ah I do recall him saying he would go to 140. It's his only option but with his dedication levels it's a non starter.

I don't think he's going to be fooling anybody here. Nobody will think he has the discipline to make 140 consistently and even if he does, surely he would be cannon fodder for the likes of Taylor at domestic level.

He's gona try and make 140 now. Now? After years of people saying it? Now at 31 with his career in the dumps, now it's the answer? Why didn't he try it 5-7 years ago. This guy makes me tear my hair out. Just a wrong'un.

If he started his career at 135 and stayed there and lived the life, instead of going on the beans on toast diet, he could have done something I believe. I mean, he's probably better than Ricky Burns if he put his mind to it and dedicated himself.

Just doesn't have the heart.

I don't think that it's a sure thing that he will be cannon fodder at domestic level at 140 lbs.

Maybe has more moves than Burns but less than 10% of the balls and heart.

I think Frankie is pretty ballsy, but gives up all his advantages at welter.

I know he has a family, and loves them dearly - but he should maybe get his ass over to the States for a 6-week slog. Maybe go the wildcard etc and combine that with trying to get a proper university or Olympic weight program going.

I think he has no rolls of the dice left now, and he needs to see for himself if he can give it one last run at 140lb - and getting away from his habits and old routine is the only way.

What does he have to lose ?

He should but he really lacks heart. He couldn't even do it at the Olympics, making every excuse under the sun while looking pudgy at the waist.

He's going to struggle to make the weight, probably come in overweight, get starched again and call it quits.

The writing was on the wall when he failed to make weight at the Olympics. Was that a first? I don't recall any other fighters not making weight at the Olympics. It's the pinnacle of their careers at that point. Something is lacking from Gavin. Talent can only get you so far.

He's had Kerry Kayes on tap right from the amateurs. He can't force him to do it, though.

All about character with Gavin methinks. If you don't have the right mentality you're not gona do it against guys who have got balls of steel and super dedication levels, even if you are more naturally silky than some of them.

I also think quite simply Gavin lacked power for the pros, no shame in that part of it either so he has some excuses in this department, people like Steven Bell were decent amateurs who just didn't have quite enough power to make an impact in the pros.

His power would have been better at 135.

He might have been more exciting at that division, although that wouldn't be hard. He's always been a horror to watch hasn't he.

I agree that he lacks the power to be a force at world level but even with considering that, with better conditioning he should have cruised past the likes of Bundu and Eggington on points.

The comparisons with Ricky Burns are very good – Frankie Gavin has twice the talent but about 10% of the commitment, dedication and heart.

Being from Birmingham I’ve come across Frankie many times and he is the most down to earth, sound bloke you’ll meet but you can just tell he hasn’t got the mentality to be a top level sportsman, sadly.

I rewatched the Eggington fight and the commentary is hilarious. Macklin and co telling us how great Gavin is while he's taking a hiding. "This is one of Frankies best performances" while Eggington is hammering him in the corner

Yeh that was a real shocker. Macklin is such a biased commentator, they should ban him from commentating on his mates.

They were bigging up Gavin every chance they got, but they were scoring it widely for Eggington.

It was a very strange commentary performance.

It was a great exemplification of the commentary chaos since Smith took over the commentary booth.

Things have been so much worse since the recent shake-up.

Yeh coke is basically going to the sugar jar and eating it. Not to mention fizzy drinks being generally full of shit, chemicals, E numbers and other nasties that a 'professional athlete' should be going nowhere near.
