Chavez Sr: If No Drugs or Alcohol - I Might Have Reached 100-0!

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Hall of Famer Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. finally retired from the sport in 2005, with a huge fight record of (107-6-2, 86 KOs).

Chavez came very close to reaching an unbeaten record of 100-0.

Chavez was 89-0-1 when he entered the ring against Frankie Randall in January of 1994. In a fight that most expected Chavez Sr. to easily win, Randall did the unthinkable when he dropped the Mexican legend in the eleventh round - which was the first knockdown of Chavez's long career. And Randall walked away with a close twelve round split decision win.

Some will argue that Chavez Sr. should have lost 1993 battle with Pernell Whitaker, which ended in a controversial draw.

Chavez Sr. admits that his career, by the time he fought Randall, was severely affected by drugs and alcohol. He says he was out of control which led to problems in the ring, in camp and especially in his family life.

A few days ago Chavez Sr. discussed how he was abusing his body during training camp for a scheduled fight with Miguel Angel Gonzalez in Mexico City in 1998. The fight ended in a twelve round split draw.

Now happily retired and fully rehabilitated from those problems, he takes full responsibility for his past mistakes.

"I regret the things that I did in my life.I f I had not consumed drugs or alcohol, I might have reached 100 undefeated fights. It would have been an unequaled record. Logically, I did not like the way my career ended, because around that time period I did a lot of damage, especially to my family," Chavez Sr. told A la Vera del Ring .

The last fight of Chavez's career took pace in September of 2005, when he was stopped in five rounds by 29-6 Grover Wiley. There was a measure of family revenge a few years later, when in 2007 a 31-0 Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. knocked out Wiley in three rounds at New York's Madison Square Garden.

A lot of people tend to say he just fought cab drivers for a long time.

But I know Mexicans tend to have loads of fights in their country when starting out. JCC Jr. did the same. Canelo started having meaningful fights after 30 off fights and Gilberto Ramirez has had 34 fights, at the age of 24. Only started fighting recognisable opponents when he hit the 30 fight amrk.

Boy, JCCSr has a hard time letting JCCJr get the limelight, ha? No wonder why their relationship appears to be so strained. Here, Jr is in what is perhaps the biggest fight in Mexican History and his Dad can't stop talking about himself and making headlines about his stupid career. No wonder why the kid seems to hate his Father.

The guy should shut up and step aside so his kid can have HIS time. No one wants to hear your excuses especially when you seem more concerned about losing boxing matches than destroying your family with drugs.

Same neighborhood but at least Chavez realizes how good he actually was and it's proportionate. The Eubanks think they have done way more than they have in Boxing. Delusional...

What's the problem if he was asked about it? He's still a major figure in Mexican boxing, and many people find it interesting when fighters open up about their careers and personal struggles.

No but he wouldn't have reached 100-0, just like JCC wouldn't have.

Lol, pretty silly analogy. He's talking about going 100-0, pea was in there and doing just as many drugs. Just a different level of greatness than your boy.

Disagree completely chavez's career surpasses Pernell's ,who did Pernell ever beat? Buddy mcgirt was probably the best Pernell ever beat , Nelson was a very good fighter but a feather weight . Camacho and Rosario were better than anyone Whitaker beat.
Pernell beat Chavez & Nelson. Two great fighters. I also thought he clearly beat Oscar. Chavez has a lot of really good wins as opposed to great ones. Nowhere near Pernell IMv, considerably overrated. Either way, 100-0 with the same ledger is delusional.

I really can't understand your closed minded thinking you seem to think chavez's statement has to include Whitaker why? Chavez's wasn't a welterweight he just thought there for Whitaker and a few late fights Chávez could of stayed at 140 for another year and got another 10-12 wins to of got to 100-0 .
His point is pretty clear; Chavez actually fought Whitaker and Saad thinks that he'd never beat Whitaker hence no reaching 100-0. Chavez didn't say "I'd have reached 100-0 if no drugs, alcohol, or Sweet Pea".

And mine is pretty clear is it not ? He could of got to 100 the only mentioning Whitaker is you 2 .
But he actually fought Whitaker before his hundredth fight. Saad is discussing Chavez Sr's actual quote that he could have reached 100-0 had he laid off the booze and dope, not your extension that he could have fought twelve cabbies. Nobody is saying he couldn't have done that.

As for welterweight, while technically that division, JCC made pea come in at 142. Any weight disadvantage would have been to Pernell.

Chavez probably would have made it to 100-0 -- if he fought as many cream-puffs as Jimmy Wilde and Sugar Ray Robinson fought.

It was only through sheer accident Wilde didn't make 100-0 -- because he didn't fight anyone who was any good for his first 100 fights.

With any luck Robinson would have made 100-0... Only a loss to slow-assed Jake LaMotta and 2 draws to beatable fighters kept him from attaining it.

Unheralded Luis Ramon Campas made it to 56-0... so the secret isn't fighting really good opponents.

Styles make fights, JCC was a great fighter by any measure. His fight with Taylor is a perfect examples of his strengths.

Who cares if he should have lost to Whittaker, Pernell was an all time great, what\s the big deal?

It was the last straw for me. I lost nearly all interest in boxing for over a decade.

Chavez should come clean about his chronic hand problems, which were just as much a factor in his career.

The Laporte, Mayweather 2, etc fights were he obviously didn't throw the right as he could.

The fathers can be involved a bit considering it's their name that has led to their sons getting the opportunities that they do. Both Eubank and Chavez Jnr would be way off where they are if it wasn't for their fathers reputations within the sport.
