Briggs-Oquendo deal reached - fight to go ahead

Post by Like a Boss »

Briggs-Oquendo deal reached, date and place TBA

Square Ring Promotions and Hitz Entertainment Corporation announced today that they have reached an agreement for the Fres Oquendo vs. Shannon Briggs fight for the WBA World Heavyweight Championship.

“We are really excited that we were able to reach an agreement with Kris Lawrence and Henry Rivalta of the Heavyweight Factory,” said John Wirt, CEO of Square Ring Promotions. “It was a long process and a difficult negotiation, but the good news is that Fres will now have the chance to finally win the WBA Heavyweight crown. I want to thank Gilberto Mendoza, George Martinez and everyone else at the WBA for this great opportunity.”

“Fres is in fantastic shape and he is focused on winning this bout like I have never seen before,” said Bobby Hitz, President of Hitz Boxing. “I met with him today and watched him spar and he looked awesome. His preparation is second to none and I predict it is going to be a great fight.”

Provides Briggs the opportunity to be the first heavyweight to win a 'world' title in 3 separate decades.

Well he really only won the WBO against Liahkovich. Foreman vacated his world titles before fighting Briggs & this fight is only for the Regular paper title not the real WBA title... This regular stuff is a disgrace to boxing. This is nothing more then a fight for a top contender spot which neither really is because they both have not beat a legit contender in over a decade... At least this fight gets rid of one of these guys. Hopefully Briggs wins because he is more entertaining to listen to. Oquendo could win this fight though as he is much better than anyone Briggs has faced since Klitschko. :brick: what are we taking a ride in the Delorian back to the future?

Imagine this ended up being an epic battle of skill and heart. A fight of the decade.

That's the thing with two past their sell by date heavies, never say never. It could turn into a pleasing war, but far more likely it will result in Briggs chasing around a running Oquendo for 12 dreary rounds.
